I believe, per my reading of the CBA, that he can be a free agent June 1 if he quits school. I'm obviously not an expert in contracts outside the realm of intellectual property, but here is the relevant section, given he started school a year late.

If a Player drafted at age 18 or 19, who had received a Bona Fide Offer in accordance with Section 8.6(a)(ii) above, becomes a bona fide college student prior to the second June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft and does not remain a bona fide college student through the graduation of his college class, his drafting Club shall retain exclusive rights for the negotiation of his services until the later of: (a) the fourth June 1 following his selection in the Entry Draft, or (b) thirty (30) days after NHL Central Registry receives notice that the Player is no longer a bona fide college student; provided that if the Player ceases to be a bona fide college student on or after January 1 of an academic year and the Player: (1) is in his fourth year of college and has commenced his fourth year of NCAA eligibility, or (2) is in his fourth year of college and is scheduled to graduate from college at the end of his fourth year, then in the circumstances described in (1) or (2), the Club shall retain the exclusive right of negotiation for such Player's services through and including the August 15 following the date on which he ceases to be a bona fide college student.

His rights expire August 15 2025. We have time. And he definitely is a pro caliber player. NHL is still up for question, but he should try. He has his whole life to work at a desk in a cubicle

We have little to no depth anywhere at this point so there is potential for him to make the big club in 2-3 years possibly if he keeps developing.

I don't know. If he has interest from an NHL team, I don't think it's inconceivable he decides to leave. Pretty straightforward to go back and finish the degree after pursuing hockey.

And if he does decide to leave, he gets to be a free agent if he wants (probably?). Might tilt the decision a little.

He’s barely an NHL prospect and it would technically be tampering for NHL teams to pursue him currently.

Guys at Edwards level don’t tend to leave college early. The advantage of scholarship and leaving with a degree far outweighs starting your pro career early.

There are lots of guys at Edwards level, prospect wise, and we don’t see tons of guys leaving school early to become marginal free agents. If a guy does leave early it’s usually because he’s become a top college player and thinks he has a real NHL path in the near future; that’s not Edwards.

By far the most likely scenario is he plays a 4th year, then immediately signs with the Devils and goes to Utica.

It’s unlikely he tops out as anything more than a 6/7, and will likely have a long career as a solid AHLer, so even if he decides to wait til August and go UFA, it’s not gonna matter much.

Barring a massive development spike, it’ll be at least two more years until he’s in the running for playing time alongside the Hatakkas and Vilens awaiting call-up opportunities.

EDIT: overall, it’s probably a good sign that players with marginal NHL aspirations may not have a future with the Devils. I think it’s important to have players like Edwards in the system, but if you’re ever relying on them to be valuable pros, that’s a problem.

Reading the CBA always reminds me why my SAT verbal wasn't as high as I would have wanted.

As you said since Edwards played his D+1 in the USHL, he could expedite his free agency without the graduating. Most notable cases of this were Blake Wheeler and Justin Schultz but they were more highly regarded prospects than Edwards. Wheeler/Schultz could be promised NHL spots off the bat whereas I don't think any NHL teams could guarantee that for Edwards.

I guess I'm surprised they didn't try to swap him with a similar center prospect that might be blocked elsewhere.

Eh, I think it's 50-50. While Edwards is long-term blocked by Silayev and Luke Hughes, short-term there's definitely an opening on the blueline as the 4th left side D.

I haven't watched a ton of Michigan this year, but I can't imagine too many teams where Edwards would have a clear path to an NHL spot immediately.

If there was worry about him being a flight risk, we could sign him to an ELC and burn the first year immediately (we used that carrot to sign guys like Anderson/Wood/Santini). If Edwards were to go the August 15th route, he'd still have to sign a 2 year ELC that wouldn't start until 2025-26.

Edwards is an Alberta guy so naturally I wondered if Calgary would have been interested in him a secondary piece of the Markstrom deal. But even they have a couple offensive minded LHD (Poirier/Morin) and a stay at home LHD (Grushnikov) in the AHL.

It's not like the Comets don't have room for him.

They currently play Vilen, Hatakka, and White on the left side. White has also, played on the right side.

On the right they have Casey.

The others on the right are Osipov, Strand, and Dello.
Strand and Dello were acquired from other AHL franchises for futures!
Osipov in a trade for an Adirondack Thunder player. These guys are not going to block Edwards as White moves to the right leaving the 2nd/3rd LD spot for Edwards.

NJ signed Mikael Diotte (RD) to a 3-yr ELC starting this season (24-25) He played 5 games for the Comets and was reassigned to ECHL Adirondack where he has played 2 games. That's 7 on the season before he suffered a season ending injury.

I don't see any reason that the Comets would keep Strand, Osipov, or Dello for their top 6.

Next season would be Casey ELC (if not in NJ) and Vilen, ELC.
After those 2 it's White on the 2nd yr of his contract, Hatakka RFA, and Diotte yr-1 of his ELC as his injury will cause this season to slide. Expect he will be back in Adirondack.

Hatakka and White would have to clear waivers. Watching Hatakka right now I think he may have outgrown his welcome. He's already cleared waivers once and his injury record is enough to tell NJ he's too much of a risk. Re-sign him and place him on waivers for reassignment to Utica to serve as a regular for the Comets. It's highly unlikey that White gets snatched for an NHL roster and he becomes the veteran presence for Utica.

NJ only has MacDermid and Cholowski (UFA) up there and they would have to re-sign Dennis which I see as highly unlikely with Dumoulin in house doing well. So, if anyone of the new guys gets a contract to backup in NJ it would be him. Cholowski could get a contract with the understanding he will be waived to go to Utica. Both guys will be UFAs after the season. I could see the Devils only re-signing one of the 2 unless 1 of them gets no offer elsewhere and settles for the waiver to be assigned to Utica.

I'm not sure where Silayev is playing next season. If he comes over I would see him start out in Utica due to the depth I suggested will be in NJ on the left side. Edwards and Silayev with Vilen is a solid trio. White, Casey, Hatakka (If he's in Utica) on the right.

NJ would have no problem signing Edwards to start his pro career in Utica as part of their Top 6. It will be up to him. If he thinks he is going to start out inn the NHL, I have a surprise for him. It ain't going to happen. Both Nemec and Casey, much more highly regarded prospects, have spent a lot of time in Utica.
