Canada may still be the favorite for gold on paper but the Americans could have sent their strongest team ever to Korea if the NHL allowed it. Sadly, they wont get the chance this year, and probably not in 2020 either if the WCoH remains the way it was in 2016. 2022, maybe?

This cant be f***in serious can it?

Canada still would have been the favourites hands down, they aint scared of the U.S, come talk to me about this in five years, and I have been hearing about this since 1995.We were supposed to go down then, but it never happened, jesus.

The nhl not going probably did fans from all other countries a favor, they didnt have to lose to them again, because that is what the odds favored. It saved them the agony of all that once again.

Hopefully people in Hockey Canada are stupid enough to take this "insult" serious and challenge the big bad unbeatable Yanks to a 7 game Border Clash. You want a shot at the title, Yanks, let's have at it!

If any team has a shot at winning a 7 game series with us, it's the Americans. but I still think Canada would win in 6.

I've been waiting for this type of series for many many moons.

Americans always seem to choke in best on best international tournaments, much like the Russians. Blow through the round robin and shit the bed in the medal round.

Im gonna look at this article as satire.

Remember when Team USA built their team to "beat Canada" lo. How'd that go for ya?

the moment that roster was announced, most of us die-hard USA posters were outraged at the archaic selection of that team. I have never seen a worse selection process or committee in my life - that team was not built to beat Canada, they were built to beat themselves...which they so absolutely did.

this group is as close to pound for pound vs Canada as I have seen since 1996...the talent levels are rising for the US, you can see it everywhere you look now.

Hard to deny that, that's for damn sure.
Team USA is on the rise and IMO would've given Canada a run for its money had the NHL been going to these Olympics

Talent Gap is closing. Depth is another issue. There are still a lot of players on team USA that would realistically have zero chance to make team Canada. The converse, not so much.

And as had been said, the Canadian hockey team doesn't fear anyone.

To be the man, you have to beat the man.

They are also missing the Crosby/McDavid kind of player

There's a difference between calling this potentially the most talented pool of players available to USA Hockey and calling the US the best at hockey. The American sports media barely acknowledges hockey's existence, nevermind has delusions of grandeur about our standing in it.

There's zero doubt Team Canada wouldn't have been the runaway favorites for this tournament if NHL players were going, that doesn't mean Americans shouldn't have been able to get excited about having a roster better than the one that lost the gold medal in OT because of an idiot coach.

But, alas, they're not going. Phil Kessel's international career probably ended at the age of 26. Lame.

I agree that Canada is not the clear favorites in this tournament.

But the fact that they have this conspiracy that the league didn't send NHLers to the games in order to protect Canada's "defending champions" label speaks volumes that they are trying to dig for reasons as to why they are better. It's very similar to the "American teams always win the cup, therefore the USA is the best at hockey" logic their media uses.

It. Makes. No. Sense.

Having said that, you do need to consider the source here. [MOD]

To be fair, I think the US would have had a shot at a medal. Canada likely takes gold, Sweden silver... but there's a chance for 3rd.

Agreed. Of course looking over the rosters for the first time the US might still have a shot at a medal. Russia is the clear favorite, followed by Finland. Overall though, looking at these rosters makes me realize how uninterested I am in watching this tournament. I'll watch Finland because of Tolvanen and I'll watch USA mainly because Bobby Butler is an Admiral but other than that, I couldn't care less.

Does this guy honestly not know who Mcdavid is and the fact that the winning team in 14 didn't even have a healthy Stamkos on it.
