He has. Looking very old this year. Still a serviceable player but no longer a top pairing defenseman. Maybe he'd be alright as a number four on a good team. He does still occasionally flash the elite offensive skills he has.

As far as EK goes, I'm a Pens fan and thus obviously watch them regularly.

He's still really good. Has some defensive issues at times but his offensive skills are still so good that I think he'd be a genuine asset to a playoff team. And I'm sure most GMs know that.

The issue is obviously the contract. If the Pens retained heavily I'm sure there would be interest.

Karlsson is also being hampered by the donkey of a head coach we have that said he was going to make EK’s game “more complete.”

Give him to a coach that isn’t a complete moron and you’ll see more flashy numbers like he was putting up.

His defense is so good that it's measured by his ability to make breakout passes!

Atrocious contract + he's getting older. People are really trying to downplay how bad he is defensively, it pretty much counters any offensive production he may provide. A glorified Tyson Barrie.

...it's not that he's "bad" defensively...as long as you just pretend he's not "there" defensively... 🤣

I just love how his EV Defence is 0 on the card. Don't get me wrong, I don't have any respect for that twitter user or his methods. Bad acquisition by Dubas, likely told to compete for the last while Crosby and Malkin are playing.

Also kind of feel bad for Karlsson at this point. He signed a big deal to go to West coast and have a nice retirement deal there. Then got traded to East coast, to a completely different situation. Now may get traded again to elsewhere.
 
He doesnt have defensive issues

he straight top doesnt play defense period
he knows what his strength is, which is transition and offensive shot assists at a very elite level amongst defense

but he has essentially has the worst defensive underlying numbers in the league
gives up controlled entries
can't break up cycle
cant defend against hd scoring chances

Everyone knows he sucks defensively, the disagreement is that people don't think his horrible defense outweighs his offense and puck moving.

Karlsson is the 12th highest scoring defensemen in the NHL this year despite being on an absolute mess of a team. Even with how he has declined, he's still one of the premier OFD in the league and brings a skillset that not many other players in the NHL can offer.

You bring up Tyson Barrie and the comparison is appropriate. Barrie was a very useful defenseman until he stopped producing. He only fell out of usefulness in the NHL because he went from a 55-60 point guy to a 30 point guy, at which point his defensive issues overtook the offense. The same thing happened with guys like Schultz and Yandle as well.

Contending teams don't have the cap space for Karlsson, even retained.

And teams that are bringing in Karlsson to play meaningful minutes aren't contenders

No one can afford him at $10 million, numerous teams could afford him at $5 million with the Penguins retaining.

It's more of a question about fit and who Karlsson would waive for than his contract. The Penguins will have to retain money to make it stomachable if they're going to trade him.
