He'll do well in Colorado. He fits well on the third pair. Best thing about him, is you can slot him into the second pair on an emergency basis and he doesn't hurt the team.
He's good value at under a million.

Ironically at $900k he is exactly what we need right now. A league minimum D who can play both sides and slide into the top 4 when called upon. That wasn't the case at $2M but we are now perilously thin on D.
We should be shopping for a versatile player like Brannstrom while we break it to Hamonic that it's Belleville or bust for him.

900 k on a one year deal. No takers at the trade deadline. Maybe he just isn't that good and teams don't like tiny players on the back end. Really nice guy, competes super hard. This is likely his last chance I hope he plays well and continues his NHL career or its gonna end up being Europe for him.
Agreed but a veteran is probably more ideal that is a righty. Wonder if Schultz would sign for around that number.
Unfortunately they cannot send Hamonic down. Has a full NMC. A true Dorion special.

If any team can turn a small defenceman into an asset it's the Avalanche. It's a bit of a funny fit because they are already small on D and have guys that do what he does but better, but they clearly have a type over there.
It's funny because at 900k he checks a lot of boxes for this team. They likely want a bigger veteran but assuming they're running with Kleven on the 3rd pair they could use a puckmover on the right.
Was never going to work here and I understand why they didn't want him at $2+ million/season so it is what it is, but I wouldn't be shocked if he carved out a role as a solid but unspectacular player elsewhere.

Check the list of available free agents - there are quite a number of defencemen still out there without contracts 48 hours after the start of free agency. Shattenkirk and Justin Schultz are both RHD and available, and the truth is that at this point no one will be offering them anything other than about a million AAV. We just need to convince one of them that Ottawa is a team on the rise, which may be tough after our step back last year...

That contender will 100% look to replace him if there's an opportunity to before the playoffs. Brannstrom is there because he's a cheap option that isn't going to hurt them on the bottom pairing, but if they want to be tough to play against in the playoffs then he has no spot on that team, or any team for that matter.

We're more likely to face them in the first round.
Brannstrom is fine, but we need/needed a different look. Just like Jensen will be a better fit than Chychrun, I expect Kleven to be a better fit than Brannstrom.
We had Brannstrom on the PK... that's just not a good role for him, but we didn't have a better option. That's why he's gone.
He found room at $900 K not $2 million. Big difference.

Well why wouldnt you build a team that can win when it counts? Whats the point otherwise? Did you want to spend 2.2 million on a bottom pair d man that no one else in the league would take for a 7th rounder at the trade deadline?
There's a reason he is on a 1 year deal at just over league minimum.

How would the sens have signed Brannstrom for that price? He clearly wanted a change of scenery so he wasnt signing for 900 k. Gregor is much faster than Kelly and this team needs speed who is also going to make around 300 k less than Kelly would have with Arb rights. JBD makes 800 K and naturally plays RD.Of course, it will be such a joy to watch one of Hamonic and JBD play all season instead!

There is always a market for depth options on D who can prove that they can handle some level of NHL minutes. There generally aren't enough to go around. It's why you often see guys who fanbase perceived to be bad at D still get a 6th or 7th round pick in a trade during the season when teams are desperate, or why someone like Lassi Thomson was claimed on waivers last year.
Brannstrom is unlikely to stick around the NHL long term because he is the type of player who can make more money (after taxes) in other leagues than near league minimum in the NHL, and he will not have to worry about the uncertainty of waivers and trades. He is the typical superstar outside of the NHL who simply can't translate to the speed and size of the NHL game.
The reason they couldn't move him was likely his cap hit. If he has a 900k cap hit, they probably could have gotten a late pick for him at some point. He also isn't a playoff type of defenseman. He is someone a team like the Islanders might have targeted when their entire backend was hurt and they needed someone who could bridge them through that part of the season. He is not a player teams would have looked at as a way to bolster their playoff roster.
It's disappointing that he didn't work out here because of the context of his acquisition. Things were wide open here on defense. I think we had Boro playing 18 minutes a night at one point in the rebuild. The fact that he failed to make it here is a testament to the low possibility of him becoming a top 4 D in the NHL.

Dude this team can't win past the October because of its core players. Like let's work towards that so that we even have a shot to win "when it counts".

I feel like Brannstrom has become a boogyman for some, like he was one of the reasons we were losing.
Like he was the reason we were bad defensively or soft or easy to play against.
Which is obviously not true. I mean If only the rest of the team had Brannstroms ability to raise his game, his mentality and drive to win.
This run of losing is ALL on the core. Not a bottom pair d who drove possession.
