The only other questions I have about camp are mostly general.
Do other teams keep their camps open to public?
Have the Otters ever had private camp or is this a first?
If it's the first time (non-covid related) then is it because of our new HC? If so, I'm not a fan in the slightest, especially with little to no one covering it. Camp should be open to fans so they can watch the kids, but what do we know as the ones who pay their bills.
Quick look and Saginaw/Flint both have scrimmages open to public but not all activities. With Owen Sound and Sarnia, it looks like all on ice activity is open to the public. Those are the only 4 teams I checked
So yes, it’s very odd. In the past - pre COVID - it was open to the public. Vic Fernandes (former GoErie reporter) speculated it’s because of COVID … what a complete crap excuse that is and not at all believable. Reminds me why I used to dislike Vic - he’s usually off base when he speculates. They were fine selling tickets all of last year and preseason is open to the public. It’s not health related. The only explanation is the new coaching staff or limited staffing at EIA to want to accommodate any fans. Not sure what else it could be. It’s embarrassing though that they don’t at least release a reason for it and provide better reporting / updates in the meantime. At least in the past, the team would release daily articles on players cut, roster height/weight info and testing info, some highlights or stats from scrimmages, etc. There isn’t even that. A couple interviews with players who of course are saying the right things like they have for 5 straight years - “this year is different!”
Maybe it’s closed to the public because Dave Brown is embarrassed by the product on the ice?
