Finalist pulling away now
Celebrini, michkov, wolf
you forgot this guy

Lmao he has more even strength assists than both Michkov and Celebrini. Him being a better power play producer on top of that is not a negative. Mental gymnastics at their finest. And you flopped on your face with them 😂

He's great and everything but this is a weird selection of words. With 5 goals scored of course he has more assists, while other kids have 22 and 21 goals. It's natural for a defenseman to have more assists than forwards.

That isn’t a given at all lmao. The forward should have more assists, points, and goals the vast majority of the time. Defenseman should have a larger percentage of their production as assists, but that isn’t what we were talking about. Hutson has more even strength assists than both, in absolute terms. That is exceptional.

Also, my post was in response to someone who claimed that Hutson is not as impressive as Michkov and Celebrini because he is “too reliant on powerplay assists for his production” - a blatant lie.

Hutson is on a much better team - a team that doesn't seem to want to play defense even when they are on the verge of a playoff spot. Praising a D-Man on a team that's given up 20 goals in the last 4 games (all losses) while trying to make the post season seems "off" to me but we ALL have our biases - myself included.

Celebrini is an 18 year old on the worst team in the NHL. He plays a terrific 200 foot game. He is close to PPG. He has also played 12 / 13 less games.

Celebrini would have my vote.

You may want to check how Hutson has performed relative to the rest of that d corps in those games lmao. He's been the best Hab in each of those 4 games.

Michkov was fantastic tonight

Hutson was really good too though.

It's basically 4 guys putting up regular calder winning seasons at the same time

Wolf Celebrini Hutson Michkov all of these kids are already way too good at their respective positions , I say share the trophy between all 4 of them and let's all have a kumbaya celebrating hockey , these guys are filthy
What a relief for MM torts is finally gone. He had a rough start in his first year with his coach for sure.

Is it Hutson or is it the team?

Hutson played 104 minutes during those 4 games and is a +4 during that time.

Every other dman is a - player during that stretch. The jackeye - Savard pair is -5, Carrier is -6, Matheson is -3.

Good things are happening when he's in the ice, bad things without him.

You're embarrassing yourself. Hutson has been on the ice for 2 goals against in that period, one of which being in 3-on-3.
The Habs are a free for all out there. They don't play D. To say that a D-Man on a team that can't / won't play D (even when the playoffs are on the line) should win the Calder, is silly.

Yeah, it's like have 4 Calder winners in one year. This is really cool!

I fear you may be either intellectually disabled or trolling, because Hutson has been point per game and excellent at both ends of the rink since the 4 nations (aka throughout this playoff push).

He is hardly excellent defensively. LOL.

Anyway, we all see what we want to see - myself included. I feel Celebrini should win. I hope he does.

Soo I know people aren't arguing in good faith but let's look at what the stats actually say. Individual vs on-ice is a proxy for how much the individual impacts the game vs how good the team is overall:

Celebrini

Hutson

Michkov

It is hard to compare defensemen to forwards directly, the ranges are different, but you can see that Celebrini leads almost all the individual stats in far fewer games, and you can see Philly and Montreal are both significantly better teams than SJ. Hutson has about 45% more ice time on the season than either forward as well.

It’s not crazy to think he would have 15 more points without the prison that is Torts. Celebrini will most likely win the Calder. Awesome rookie class in general it’s one of the best in recent memory

His team has given 20 goals in the last 4 games yet he's a +4 lmfao such ridiculously stupid logic.

Let’s not kid ourselves; there is absolutely no logic involved in that guy’s takes lol.

He’s been told several times about Hutson’s excellent play at both ends of the ice during the stretch in question (the “playoff push”, which he brought up, btw), yet he just continues muttering about the Habs being bad defensively, therefore Hutson shouldn’t be in consideration for the Calder.

By his same “logic”, Michkov and Celebrini should both be disqualified because they play on defensive teams even worse than the Habs. He doesn’t realize that the stupid argument he’s using to downplay Hutson applies even more to Michkov and Celebrini 😂

He's definitely not excellent defensively, but he's been passable in his own zone for a while now. He had a rough first 5-6 weeks learning what he could get away with, but his underlying numbers are actually quite good since then. He's still a limited player in obvious ways, but he's done a really good job adjusting. And his offensive game more than makes up for any deficiencies in his defensive play.

He leads all Habs dmen in 5v5 goal differential this year (+6) and is 3rd on the team in scoring. Hard to argue he's not a big reason for their success this year.

Celebrini is awesome BTW. What a gem. I severely underrated how good his skating would translate.

You're right, my friend.

Instead of trying to denigrate Hutson, I should have just made the case for Celebrini. Point taken.

Celebrini [....] He plays a terrific 200 foot game.

Giveaways per 60 at 5v5
Celebrini 5.62
Hutson 3.76

Takeaways per 60 at 5v5
Celebrini 1.61
Hutson 1.86

5v5 GA/60
Celebrini 3.23
Hutson 2.65

5v5 On ice save%
Celebrini 88.89
Hutson 89.96

Not denying Celebrini has a good 200 foot game, but Hutson played almost 150% more minutes at 5v5 and handles the puck A LOT and his individual defensive stats (TakeA/60, GiveA/60) are pretty good and better than Celebrini's. He's 3rd among all Ds (600 min or more) at 5v5 for Takeaways/60.

You mentioned the goals allowed by the Habs in the last few games, yet fail to mention Hutson has been on the ice for less goals allowed among all Habs Ds in that sequence.

Last 9 games at 5v5:

And yes, Hutson gets a lot of offensive faceoffs because he's their best offensive D, but his zone usage (time he spent in each zone) is pretty even between Oz, Nz and Dz (42-20-38), meaning he must get in-play shift changes that send him every which way.
