Epic Calder Race 2024-25

What do haters have to say about this one?

If you watch the games you know Lane is far, far from being a liability defensively.

Very quick on the breakout, when he gets to a puck at the same time as the fore checker he often comes out with it, rarely gives the puck to the opponent.

The only situation where I’d say he’s below average is defending in front of the net when the opponents’ cycle is well established

Your first 2 bullet points make no sense. Every team in the nhl would be happy to have Hutson in their top 4 and pp1. He isn't playing there just because theres no one better on the habs. He deserves that role with his play. He was also used on pp2 for the first 20 games.

There are a number of teams that already have a proven and effective PP1 Dman. I don't think it is crazy to to assume that it might have taken Hutson more than 20 games to lay claim to the PP1 spot. In Montreal, he had to displace Matheson, which still took 20 games. Although Matheson's PP numbers last season are pretty much identical to Hutson's this season.

It took 20 games because MSL didn't want to upset the vets. Hutson was the better PP player from day 1.

It's also 7.8 p/60 for Hutson vs 5.6 for Matheson despite Matheson playing on the top unit the whole season and Hutson spending a 3rd of the year on PP2.

Funnily enough, Spittin' Chiclets were the ones who forgot.

They spent like 3 mins talking about how hot the Habs were. Said Suzuki and Caufield were on fire after getting snubbed for 4 nations how Slaf was trending up, and how they had tons of talent coming up in the system. Tons of praise. Not one mention of Hutson.

That is going to happen on 95% of teams.

My entire point was that Montreal was a great fit and about as close as possible to the ideal opportunity for Hutson.

They offered a incredible balance between no star D limiting his opportunities and enough high end skill to capitalize on the amazing things Hutson is capable of doing.

Being in a good situation doesn't take away from what he is doing in the slightest. I was simply responding to a poster who implied playing in Montreal hurts Hutson's chances at the Calder. I also get the poster was most likely trying to imply a bias against Canadian markets or specifically Montreal.

You haven't really said anything incorrect, I just think the initial post was more directed at the Anti-Habs bias here on HF, rather than the award voters. Some guys have made it their full time jobs to hate on Hutson (Hudson) this year.

It don't matter if there are teams that already have a good pp1 dman. Hutson is that star level pp qb. Saying he's getting pp1 time because there is no Makar or Hughes already on the team is dumb logic.

Makar and Hughes didn't have a superstar dman on their roster either to take away their pp1 time during their rookie season.

Is Celebrini lucky that San Jose doesn't have 4 better forwards to take away his pp1 time? Or that kind of logic don't make sense because Celebrini deserves to be a pp1 player regardless of the rest.

This is not what I am saying. I am saying that the situation in Montreal is an amazing fit for a highly skilled Dman like Hutson.

I think he would be putting up good to great numbers playing for 2/3 of the teams in the league. I just feel that what he adds to Montreal specifically is a big part of what is likely to be a historic season.

Most pass for a rookie defenseman . Hutson is in great compagnie and with 15 games to play maybe is gonna finish 2nd of NHL history. I'll take every single bet habs haters wan to put agains him for the calder. He take the habs in the bottom of the standing and bring them to a playoffs spot . celebrini is not even close

Celebrini came in and dominated immediately. He would be on pp1 with prime Joe Thornton.

He really did.

What amazes me watching Celebrini is that on the vast majority of nights he is clearly the best player on the Sharks and regularly the most noticeable player on either team.

Assuming he plays all 82 games and continues to put up points, we're witnessing a generational rookie season for defensemen.

This kid is an absolute stud. Even reaching 60 points (7 points in next 15 games) would put him at 7th in all-time points by a rookie defenseman...something not done since Brian Leetch in 1989

When you check those teams that those rookies of the past played for, and the years they played, the teams all averaged 3.75 goals per game or more. Every single one on the top 10 list. Even Makar and Hughes played for teams that scored 3.37 and 3.25 gf/gp, respectively.

This years habs? 3.00
