OT Goals are like shoot-out goals. They’re cool, and they help get a team regular season points, which is valuable. I never suggested it wasn’t.

But it doesn’t mean anything for playoff performance and as the fan of a franchise that won a lot of regular season games and zero Stanley Cups, I’m personally not all that interested in them as a metric of a player’s value.

I’d rather have the 3-0 go ahead regulation goal, yes, even in the case of an 8-2 game. A goal that opens the game up into a blowout is better than an OT goal, because it contributed to a regulation win, which is better than an OT win.
Couldn’t you argue that being able to score in a sudden death situation is more important than when there is less pressure?
maybe the goal itself is less valuable, but the fact that the player was able to preform in that situation is encouraging.
You could argue that if most of the players points are only on the pp, or 3v3, then they are a good specialist, but if you can add that they score those type of goals in addition to a good amount of 5v5 points then it means something.
Although to argue against myself I do remember a player who only scored around 20 goals with about half of them being gwg one season, and won the rocket trophy the next season

Yeah, I buy that. I wasn’t saying that OT goals aren’t valuable at all; I think they are, obviously, good to score because they win you an extra point and the point you make here about “clutch” is probably true too. But it would also be true of shootout goals (which are also good to score). In a vacuum yes, someone who scores a lot in OT is someone I’d want on my team because they help win me games.

I was mostly responding to the point some posters were making that OT goals are more valuable than regulation GWGs, which to me is crazy talk. If someone thinks that’s true then they should also logically conclude that SO GWG are equally valuable to OT GWG, which I doubt any of those posters actually feel. Even though 3v3 overtime counts towards stats like real hockey, it feels about as contrived to me as the shootout does, and I ultimately feel is not a representation of the ‘real hockey’ that gets played in the spring.

Lane Hutson, a defenseman, is currently second in points for a rookie, behind only Mitchkov, while also being one of two defensemen on the team that doesn't make us cry at night

Those who thinks he doesn't have a shot at the Calder don't know wtf they're talking about

He's in the mix, but let's not forget that Celebrini missed 12GP (close to PPG) and Wolf is having a quite impressive start so far.

It's still wide open

Probably needs some goals to go with his assists but yeah he's definitely in the mix.

Our highest scoring D-man and has played 20+ min in 14 consecutive games.

Now now, I got laughed at for saying the same thing the other day. It's too early to tell yet either way.
