Post-Game Talk: End of the Shanascam? | Leafs Blown Out at Home Again

All sounds good in theory.

BUT - 34, 88, and 44 all have trade protection, which potentially harms your ability to get "market value" for them in return. 44 in particular, have to wonder just what sort of market is available for someone who is coming off a pretty poor year. With 34 and 88 having massive contracts and trade protection, the only way you get a deal done is by moving them to contenders, and those contenders can't get those deals done unless they are moving some money back, which likely hampers your ability to make a great trade.

Impactful UFA signings? Not this summer. Have you seen how poor this summer's UFA pool is? Given the way the cap is going up, we should circle this summer as one where teams are going to make so many more expensive mistakes than normal.

Might just be the overall mood today - but I really have a hard time envisioning how the Leafs actually get better, and turn themselves into an actual playoff contender. Feels like the moment they refused to move Marner in 2023 before the NMC kicked in, was the moment the window shut on any reasonable expectation that this project could be turned into a cup challenging one.
You nailed it. The very second they send “Shan who had a f***ed up plan” packing, they will already be a better team.

Is making the playoffs with the same results that much better?
Of course not.

What I mean to @rumman is you can still let 91 and 16 walk, and trade 44 (if he waives).

That's a pretty substantial change to the core, and still let's you upgrade around 34, 88 and 23, for starters.

I just don't see any way we win in trading Matthews right now. Let him get healthy, hopefully return to form next year and see if it gets us over the hump. If he was hurt this year, which most of us agree he probably was, you have to give him at least a little runaway.

Right now, you're selling him for pennies on the dollar, and other GMs know it.

Yep strong D and speed on offence. They forecheck relentlessly. Leafs forward group lacks speed

In my mocks... I have Quinton Byfield, who is top ten in the league in speed bursts above 20mph, 95th percentile speed.
Ehlers is a top speedster in the league > 23 mph. 94th percentile

Who amongst the UFA's, or potential trade targets has good speed?

I highly doubt that Matthews is devalued around the league... we'd still get top dollar for him right now.

My point is building around 34 and 88 isnt going to translate to success, unless you think 34 and 88 are magically going to change their stripes which is a ludicrous concept after seeing they can’t get it done. I can’t say this enough “quitters never win, winners never quit……

I suppose being embarassed in front of their family and friends in the most important game of their lives isn't the end of the world for these guys... if they had shown some pride in losing that is.

Not these flaccid failures. Going down with a fight isn't in their vocabularly. They just took their beating and thanked Florida for it after.

Some things never change.

These lazy loafers playing like crap every spring is one of them. Choking every which way possible. When the series was all but theirs for the taking.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

I really don't want to hear whatever canned responses they spoon feed us today. The players should just shut the hell up and start putting effort into these games fans pay extortionist prices to attend. All I want is for my hometown team to not be a f***ing joke and even that seems like too much to ask for anymore.

Up yours ML$E

The sad thing is I bet they’re over it by today, the fan bade cares exponentially more than the players/coaches/managent/ownership……

When the fans care about the team more than the players do it's time to find new players.

Either make the fans happy or listen to them boo while the jersey's hit the ice. Here's a newsflash: the team isn't losing because the fans are toxic. The fans are toxic because the team keeps losing.

Because they care about this team and want to see it succeed.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the Leafs re-sign Tavares. Really, where else is he going.
That leaves Marner to let walk.

Now, next year, let’s see Matthews assume the veteran leadership Captain role. He had his rookie C year. No blaming others. If he doesn’t have it, same playoff, not up to the task, he’s next. Then Nylander. Start with that. 1 core change. Matthews/Nylander, prove we don’t need another core change.

Shanahan must be fired until the end of the week.
Once the position is filled, we can start managing the roster.

Precisely all we want to see is compete and not lay an egg like they did in gm 5 and gm 7. Lay a big hit, cross check, crash the net fooking do something instead of perimeter bullshit play.

marner basically said they are treated as gods here does that sound like a bad place to be?

unless someone is Ovi/McJesus level talent they are not getting any commercials. They get those and more because they are a Leaf. Its not controversial. Its a FACT!
Exactly. Colby f***ing Armstrong is/was in commercials for Desjardins. Why? Probably because he was a Leaf and used sparingly as a guest on sportsnet hockey broadcasts.

The part that pisses me off is he doesn't even live in Canada. Lives somewhere near Pittsburgh.
A f***ing Canadian company paying money to a Canadian player who says f*** you to Canada, I'll live in the states and spend the money you pay me in the states.

I'd tried to trade Matthews. Ask him if would waive for a team that's willing to take him.

As for Mitch, I never want to see him again in a Leafs sweater.

From a fan’s point of view I think the best move might be to sit out until the core are all gone……..

Wings are a "second favourite" team of mine. I know the club as well as Toronto.

Detroit would weep after the first Marner playoffs experience and if I was given the opportunity to trade Matthews to Detroit I would take it. Not because Larkin entices me, but at half of what Matthews makes, the depth on Toronto increases.

I know many in Hockeytown have lost faith in the "Yzerplan", but let me assure you, it's not the "Shanaplan" and because Yzerman has taken the long view approach, Detroit has little in the way of anchors, and a cap structure that will give the Wings a chance at contention with depth.

Marner and Matthews will destroy that the instant they arrive. And trust me, they're not Maple Leafs in the mold of the 90s and 00s, which makes them lightyears apart from Detroit's standard of contender.

Agreed on Nylander but you can't have him, lol.
I live in windsor .97.1 in detroit already talking marner
They d like knies too

Yes let's blame the guys making league minimum and not the $10 million+ players.

Some of this fanbase is a bigger joke than the Core 4.
Both things can be true. The supporting cast isn't good enough, and a major reason why it isn't good enough is because too much money is being spent on a useless core of five players.

So did I.

Start your petitions of protest now.

Detroit will love his regular season once. You'll think Yzerman lost his marbles by the end of the round the Wings are bounced from, then shudder that Marner is there for the rest of his NMC.

Low and slow for Detroit. That patience will pay real dividends and allow for a championship structure to remain in contention. Florida, Carolina, Dallas (Only Rantanen jumps the line next year), the same thing.

Toronto, lol...Not so much.

I'm going to say things in a different way: I like every single player on this team and I'd be sad to see any of them go. I know that's weird to hear based on the results but it's how I feel. I've taken shots at a few guys but it was meant to be playful. I think they're a talented group of likeable guys who deserve some success.
