Devils discussion (news, notes and speculation) - offseason edition

Mercer has historically been a pretty lame center, but I don't think it's the worst idea to try to pencil him in as 3C, with some caveats:

-Staple Haula to him to help.
-Glass as the 4C / emergency fill-in if the Mercer experiment fails.
-Keep him there for a while. His use at center has been sporadic at best.
-A magical perfect 3C doesn't fall into our laps for cheap otherwise.

Easier to find a middle-6 wingers to replace Mercer The Winger than it is to find a competent top-9 center. Might be worth a shot. He didn't look awful at it in the playoffs.

It’s a nice idea, but let’s be honest, the odds of Mercer suddenly looking good at C is about 12%.

Yep, he has a full NMC and would waive for Jersey. Was a healthy scratch I believe in Colo (was also hurt) I think. A swap for Haula works with Avs. They get a real C for a year, rid themselves of Ross (2 yrs left). Ross is s few $100k more.
Power forward types are really was this group is, which I think we need up and down the lineup.
It turns into a modified ntc July 1

See I think if you're going to have Mercer at Center, you need to have a Bratt like player on the wing that will drive play offensively. I don't think Mercer is good enough defensively to be a shut down defense line, and he's not going to drive the line itself. But I don't know if I really want Bratt getting tanked by Mercer either. So how hard is it to find someone who controls play from the wing? I think that's a lot more difficult to find.

Imagine if we had the depth to put Mercer as 4C and penalty kill only…

May be someone posted it before. (may be it was me? dont remember)

Anyway. I hope Fitz will not trade for Dorofeev. He is not what Devils need at all at least for his price.

He also makes like 0 sense for Vegas to trade.

He's a under contract in 25-26 for 1.8 million and just scored 35 goals. Even if you expect some regression, a team as perpetually capped as VGK has no business trading that kind of contract value unless they are getting a similar value contract back

Only fools make deals with Vegas. Yeah, Cotter ended up being an OK piece in a trade that was otherwise not good for both sides, but typically they end up being 100% the better team in any deal. I don't want to risk being bit this time.

Alex Tuch, on the other hand, I'm more than willing to listen to. Buffalo should be a trade target regardless because of disgruntled players.

Cotter deal was absolutely good for our side. We traded AHL players for a guy who can actually put pucks in the net

How was it not good for the Devils? The Devils got a useful player and a 3rd round pick, Vegas got a forward who played his way to Henderson and a goalie who had great NHL results in his very brief time there, but who was lousy in the AHL. Holtz will almost certainly be packing his bags for Europe, Schmid who knows where he ends up next season.

He’s 6 feet tall

Would be interesting if Peterka would sign. Buffalo has plenty of cap to match a reasonable offer, so Peterka would have to be okay with a scenario where he stays put. When Jacob Trouba wanted out of Winnipeg, some wondered why he didn't sign an offer sheet and it was because the Jets were in a position to match.

He is good for Vegas for his cap, but he literally is a player with nothing except shot. No positional game, no physical game, no speed.

Cotter is nice. Hope he will play 4th line role regularly next season.

Buffalo should save money for Peterka. And may be other rfa’s.
