Post-Game Talk: End of the Shanascam? | Leafs Blown Out at Home Again

It sucks, for sure. But we got beat by a better team with championship pedigree. It showed. Nothing more than that. They just weren’t able to take the next step.

The thrown leaf jersey was pretty classless. I get the emotion if you spent lots of money on tickets. But, this isn’t losing in the first round to a lesser opponent. Though the way game 7 went down sucked, the team did improve quite a bit this year. We are still another level away from the top contenders of the league.

Look, I know this is hearsay/rumors and it very well may get deleted. I wasn't even going to share it (I've been sitting on this for over 48 hours) but since the passengers comment I feel it merits being aired in here. My cousin has an uncle, unrelated to me, who went to game 6 in Florida, and ended up in the same hotel as them. Spent a lot of time bumping shoulders with them. Here's what he said...

This is not a surprise man. When Giordano went on TSN’s overdrive and defended Marner and even Willy and didn’t really have one good thing to say about Matthews, it kind of told me all you needed to know about Matthews.

I think Marner bonded with a lot of the vets in the past, Kadri, JVR, Bozak, Matt Martin, that group and I think he’s close with Morgan, McCabe, Domi and a few others. But I know someone close to McMann who says the young guys stick together, like Robertson, Woll, McMann, Benny, Stolarz is one group I believe.

But you never hear of anyone hanging out with Matthews. EVER.

Easily believable. Now that he knows Marner is gone, I'm sure he would entertain a trade somewhere on his terms which would allow the leafs to get some nice young talent to build around.

There is zero chance Marner will agree to any trade. He’s not going to help this organization get a valuable asset. He’s going to UFA and he’s made that clear from the beginning of the season.

Unfortunately, I'm not even that upset we lost because it's what this team does in Game 7's. I prepared myself for the loss.

What I didn't prepare for was the gutless performance they turned in at home in a Game 7. No balls from anyone whatsoever.

Shanahan needs to be relieved of his duties ASAP and Rielly needs to get the frigg off this team. He looked like an overweight brain dead slob out there.

That's all. Enjoy the summer.

I don't know what will happen next summer but again thisnseason...

Matthews had been just trash...

Marner still struggling to produce offensively and staring to overthink unstead of keeping play simple

Nylander after being amaizing in the 1st 2 game, he started again to avoid any kind of contact to don't be hurt especially in the defensive end and he's probably reason #1 why leafs lost gm 3 in OT. Game 3 to 7, he was a ghost waiting to get easy scoring chance and not engaged at all.

When your 2 best foward in playoff had been Knies and Pacioretty, that doesn't look good.

Marner probably played his last game in Toronto and maybe the same with JT unstead he accept a friendly deal.
But at the end whatever the change leafs will do, if Matthews/Nylander who should be leafs 2 leader play the way they did... the result will still the same

The only hope for me to a change is Knies and maybe Cowan who will step in next year and maybe change narrative of this team. Honestly i just stop having any kind of believing in this group

I think that if he wins the Cup with the Oilers he'll re-sign to win more, personally.

I think the ship sailed when Drai re-signed. Oh well. We have our own supersta-sorry couldn't type that without laughing.

I think if they win the cup that actually increases the odds he’ll leave. He would have accomplished what he wanted to in Edmonton. I think McDavid will think about coming home, we all know he wants to. July - September will be important to watch to see if he signs

They’re gonna run it back again aren’t they?
Not this time because they'll lose money if they do.
I wonder if evil Homer ever returns
Hopefully not, but he will.
I think they wanted to - but Shanahan didn't agree with the move and canned Dubas for the thought.

He forced this core to run it back again and again
Yup.

Dubas was crap but he knew it was time to change before Corporate Boy Shanny did.
Ultimately, shanny has to take the fall here. I expect him gone this week

He's at fault for marner leaving for zero assets, when it was clear as day like you said in 2023 we can't have this many softies and expect a deep run.
He IS the core. Thats why it's over.
I mean, one way for marner to turn around his image right now would be to sign for a paycut. 9 million isn't chump change.

Idk if I'm a lifelong leafs fan, the dream of being on the team that finally hoists the cup, to have my statue at legends row, my number up on the rafters, I would do it for 2 million.
I don't want Marner back for any price and I don't think I'm alone.
The saddest part about this core is I don't even know if Senior Martinez is still a fan anymore. They core should be ashamed of that.
Now there's a guy I miss. We can't have Senor Martinez but we can have Evilhomer's garbage to listen to. Total crap.

I hope you're right.

I don't think you are, no offense, but I sure hope you are.

I think McDavid is the type of guy who wants the challenge of leading this team. Honestly I think both JT and Marner are gone, so there will be room for McDavid. I think Draisaitl signed in Edmonton because he literally grew up in Alberta. When he came to Canada from Germany he played in Prince Albert. Yes draisaitl’s wife is from Toronto, but i think Drai got the money and will take over as the guy once McDavid leaves.

We are still another level away from the top contenders of the league.
They finished 4th overall this year.
2023 they were 4th overall.
2022 they were 4th overall.
2021 they were 6th overall.

Last year 5th overall Florida won the Cup.
2023 5th overall Vegas won.
2021 8th overall Tampa Bay won.
And this year the highest ranked team that can win is the 5th place Stars.

At what point does the excuses about losing to better, bigger, more talented, deeper teams, etc. stop? The Leafs are among the top 4-5 teams in the league and have been for 4 of the last 5 years.

They have the roster top-to-bottom to match any team, as the standings prove. Problem is that they're a great regular season team that just cannot elevate their game like other teams do.

I'm convinced Florida was playing us. Those kind words by Maurice and Marchand were BS.

Shanahan should be gone. Funny how he never wanted to sign in Toronto (though to be fair many don't want to) when he was free agent. But ya jump at the chance to be President.

I guess I can't blame players for not wanting to play in Toronto or for that matter Canada.

What with taxes, weather, being in the spotlight, poor management decisions (Canadian teams seem to be at the top for horrible decisions) or whatever the reason, it doesn't look promising for us.

We had Marner refuse a trade, we had the Muskoka five screw us, players have Canadian teams on their no trade lists.

Just a few years ago we allowed JVR, Uncle Leo and a few others leave in free agency when we should have traded them at the trade deadline. Everyone knew we weren't going anywhere in the playoffs that year.

We trade for players and seem to always pay a premium. Laughton, a first, Carlo a 1st and Minten this year.

The only thing I know is Shanny has to go.
If Shanna signed as a player, it would mean he would have to live in Toronto for a lot of the year. Being president for the leafs he actually spends most of his living in new York….

I don't even know what to do with this team from here. Lose Marner for nothing, no first round picks, a Captain I don't believe in who seems to have some weird season long injury every other year, a GM I don't believe in, and a President who made it all happen. The only hope I have is for some of the trash to be gone. I don't have much hope for the on-ice product in the short term.

Easy:

- don't re-sign Marner, Tavares or Shanahan
- retool and stay afloat for the next few years until 34's contract expires and we get our 1sts back
- after that, San Jose this thing into orbit except for Knies

You're thinking about this the wrong way IMO. The window is closed barring a McDavid miracle. It's over, they failed, end of story. It's done.

If you're the Leafs, you're bothering Matthews and Rielly everyday this offseason to waive their NTC.

Any idea of trying to fill in the new holes with FA slop is just delaying the inevitable.

If we had our 1sts I'd agree but we can't pull a Tyler Seguin again.

Maybe 34 would waive to go to LA or Anaheim? Not sure what those teams would give up if interested at all.

Agreed. They screwed themselves by trading their picks. And it’s very depressing to see how many picks they don’t have in the next couple of drafts

This team will not win anything for a long time.

a) He's talking about Matthews accepting a trade to a team or teams of his choice if the Leafs let Marner walk. b) I believe the one thing the Leafs could trade is the rights to negotiate with Marner before the UFA deadline. They'll get next to nothing for that but it would be at least something. Either way I would move on from him even though it looked like he at least showed some emotion last night.

I would rather keep Marner and force Matthews out of here. I think Marner isn't a leader but like a liquid can better take the shape of the container. If you put good character around him he'll have a role. This is all contingent on McDavid winning the cup this year and wanting to come home. If he straight up tells Edmonton he wants to go to Toronto they might be open to trading him than lose him for nothing. Force Matthews to waive his NTC like Tampa did with McDonagh. Trade Matthews + a 1st for McDavid. Re-sign Tavares for a discount and find another centre in Ufa.

This is all a pipe dream though because Leafs would never force a player to waive their NTC like that and McDavid probably stays an Oiler

Yeah I don’t think Marner is going to agree to that. Why would he agree to have his rights traded? A part of going to UFA is having a ton of teams court you. Why is he going to give that up and give leverage to one team? Defeats the purpose of being a UFA from a business standpoint.

Funny. Two blowouts at home and I don't blame the d at all. The approach most of the forwards had while defending was to not close space quickly or skate. We need players that will take a pound of flesh. The fact that marchand went unscathed in these playoffs is absurd.

Tanev Benny McCabe. You're beauties.
Domi , Laughton showed heart as did knoes since he clearly couldn't skate.
