Maybe they didn’t feel like they do about the situation now at the trade deadline.

For context sake, I have coached in college/university sports in Ontario. I’ve now gone back to youth sports, part of that reason was my partner wanted more time with me and as much as I loved coaching at that level, I wanted to keep her happy and I’d always choose her over coaching. We definitely had a few discussions during my final season. However my team was in a deep playoff run and it wasn’t until we got eliminated that she expressed all her concerns. She didn’t want to distract me from the task at hand. I’m more appreciative of her for allowing me to focus and not placing that feeling of guilt during the playoffs.

So I kind of understand where Dubas is coming from. I’ve gone back down to youth sports, had a lot of success this season and have spent way more time with the Mrs.

Relationship is an interesting dynamic...thanks for sharing your personal experience, and good to hear you're in a happier space with your wife...I'm sure Dubas is being pulled in two directions if that's the case...being GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs would be the pinnacle dream job for most...I guess he needs her full support and understanding to continue with it.

Again that’s just my personal experience. Dubas could totally be bullshitting us all! Also, like you said, it depends on the relationship. Some people wouldn’t mind hearing it earlier as it gives them time to handle it. Some people would rather wait to hear it.

I’m not sure I have a great handle on the Dubas situation. But I think it’s a bit of both. Maybe family has expressed concern, but I think there could be truth to Dubas using that statement as a way of controlling the narrative.

The more that I think about it, Dubas saying what he said was insane. The media firestorm it created puts even more stress on the family.

I think we'll know if he's back before the weekend.

The longer this goes on the more I’m convinced that they are letting the fan tempers calm down and then run it back.
I feel they're giving Dubas at least a week to talk to the family and figure out what they want and maybe 2 weeks tops before they decide to hire somebody else. Can't wait too long because the draft is in a month and a new GM might want to go in an entire new direction with coaches and what to do/not do with the current roster and a bunch of other staff.

At this point, it’s fair to question if there has been too much loyalty at times, potentially even as a response to criticism. This goes beyond the core and extends to the coaching staff, support players (such as Alex Kerfoot), and anyone from the SSM Greyhounds.

In that sense, it’s important that Dubas acknowledged a need to adapt and not be handcuffed by his own “persistence.” I do think Dubas has evolved since he took over as GM, especially when it comes to building proper forward depth instead of plugging in the Nic Petans and Dmytro Timashovs of the world.

In fact, throughout the roster, we can definitely argue he has improved as far as developing and adding depth to the roster. The seventh defenseman is no longer the likes of Martin Marincin. The backup goalie this past season was not Michael Hutchinson or Garret Sparks. He has made a number of good bets adding quality players via free agency: TJ Brodie, Michael Bunting, Ilya Samsonov, and David Kampf, to name a few.

The flip side of the argument is that the Leafs have struggled to make so-called “hockey trades.” The best player he ever traded away was Nazem Kadri, a move that did not turn out well. What are Dubas’ other hockey trades? Acquiring Jake Muzzin for Sean Durzi, Carl Grunstrom, and a first-round pick? Moving Jack Campbell and Kyle Clifford for Trevor Moore and two third-round picks? The Kasperi Kapanen trade?

The notable deadline moves are placed in a different category given it is a buyer acquiring talent from a seller. In terms of hockey trades, there hasn’t been much to go on, but for most of those above-mentioned deals, the other team would make them again.

Ultimately, if Dubas is retained, I think his earlier comment will be one to focus on and evaluate him by. He is acknowledging a need to veer from his original course. How would he go about it? Who would move? How does he handle the coaching staff that he put together?

I would argue that the Leafs have been outcoached – or neutral, at best – in five straight playoff series now. Over four seasons under Sheldon Keefe, they won one playoff series and a North Division title over a 56-game campaign. For a team that has conducted itself and bought as though it’s a Cup contender for three of those four years, those are not good enough results.

Dubas and Sheldon Keefe are obviously good friends and have a strong personal relationship. It is not easy to make this type of decision, but it is one the organization needs to be honest about before moving forward.

The other standout part of Dubas’ press conference on Monday was the emotional toll this entire season appeared to take on him. He was clearly emotional when speaking, and he mentioned his family and the impact it made on him a few times.

The most important thing to mention here is hoping Dubas and his family are okay. Secondly, I have been told the organization was ready to move forward with an extension of some capacity heading into Monday’s press conference, and that Dubas’ comments have thrown a bit of a wrench into it. Ownership wants to know about potential burnout before greenlighting a new contract.

The job of GM of the Maple Leafs is a difficult one at the best of times. I am not going to speculate on what is happening with Kyle Dubas personally. It will be up to him, his family, and the organization to decide whether he is in the right mental/personal space to move forward and what it would look like if he were to continue.

Chri johnston stuff was good.. chew through leather to win.. like sam f***ing bennett... winning teams have that..they just do as a focal point of their core roster.. we do not. It is objective at this point.. these stars have not had to fight for anything like making the playoffs battling for a spot.. they are good enough to coast srasons and get results .. with 95% being boring bland shit .. and for slme stretches sloppy shitty hockey

This is where analytics hit a wall.. leafs are boring. There are some pretty plays and the skill.. but these guys do not pjll the fans into their battles with passion.. they are hard to identify with.. marner laughing while getting punched.. if I was on the fence about trading him that right there would have decided it for me.. shit like that is just trash.. matthews laughing at konecny.. bunting being bunting with fake punches and tantrums that visibly were outright look! Look at me!!! It is so unlikeable

I don’t care about Matthews laughing as much, but the Marner one caught my eye because he looked genuinely surprised his good buddy Tkachuk would actually do something like that to him for no reason.

Tkachuk is his buddy first and an obstacle to Marner winning second, he seemed shocked or hurt that Tkachuk had those priorities in reverse.

I like Dubas and want him to stay, but this little gap has made it almost impossible for him to come back. Best thing for everyone involved at this point is to turn the page. Dubas is never going to win over the majority of the doubters and any GM that trades one of the core is going to lose that trade in the short term. I suspect the leafs take a step back next year in the standings. Hope I am wrong.

But at this point let’s just get on with it.

CJ mentioned it a few times, Kyle said this was brought up to him by his family a few days ago. So whatever feelings they had about Kyle working for the leafs or how they felt they were being affected wasn’t communicated until after the season ended. Which I can see being the truth. Why would his family tell him how his job is affecting them during the season?

It makes more sense to bring that up once the season is done.

This is Exhibit A of why I think he should have kept that info for himself. What his private discussions are like that enable him to commit to a job or not. That shouldn't be for our consumption. Either you stay on or don't we don't need the details.

I doubt it, if you read a bit further when he started as a player agent: "challenges with clients leaving for other agents resulted in Dubas looking for alternate careers in hockey."
He seems like the kind of person who doesn't like making those tough decisions which leads to him being taken advantage of/being a pushover. Gave every player whatever they wanted on their deals and you'd think they'd at least compete their asses off during the playoffs to do anything to win for him and not just rely on their skill but nope. Then the loyalty to guys like Kerfoot and Holl. Maybe it's best he just stays in the analytics department/behind the scenes more so it's not as stressful on him and his family and it still pays well.

The source of that quote is not exactly what wikipedia has as a citation. Wikipedia cites the Hockey news and there what is supposedly quoted is slightly different: "disappointments" { Todd Reynolds}—clients defecting to other agents—and recruited by the Greyhounds, Dubas changed careers at 25 to become one of the youngest GMs in OHL history." it does indeed mention clints going to other agents, but it leaves out SSM recruiting him.

oops: This is the source the Wikipedia article used as the source

If Dubas chooses not to return, and I assume then Keefe is done for sure. Has Brendan Shanahan done anything to assert he should still be running this organization 9 years later?

That CJ podcast is a huge indictment on this team and the program we're running here

The more I hear the more I think it's best if Dubas leaves and we deal a core piece. This culture is rotten
I just listened to the one with Dangle. It is pretty spot on and what I expected in regards to the core and the team.
The belief(including us) was that if only they make it past the 1st round, they would play dominated hockey....but that didn't happened and what made matters worst was Game 3 of the series. CJ made good points about they didn't play as bad as the stats b/c AM and JT had over 40-50shots....and they hit the posts here and there....but Game 3 is the reason why we are having these conversations.

I was on the fence about keeping Dubas, I'd have leant keep but I wasn't concerned either way

I'm now on the he's got to go side, he's become a huge distraction and that's unacceptable for somebody in the front office and it's starting to feel like he's holding the organization hostage to his feelings and wishes

This organization needs a clean out and it should start with him, the coach and then the core

This is supposed to be a business, let's start treating it like that and stop coddling our staff and players who are more than happy to take the team to the woodshed when it suits them

From the medias. lol

For all we know, Dubas could be speaking with AM, Willie(maybe not him due to being in WC) and others about their new contracts.

For some reason, fans just want stuff to happen but they often takes time.
If I am the team, even if I have all the contracts(AM, Willie, Schenn, Acciari, Sammy, Kampf, Benn, Mete....) signed, sealed and delivered, I will make the announcement one or two at a time, just to keep the TO medias busy so they don't start writing their narratives as inside source or news.
