GDT: End of season media availability - Today

It doesn't help enough. They didn't lose cause of lack of grit but cause Matthews, Marner, Nylander all did their yearly disappearing act.
Nylander's is especially annoying because he has a bunch of playoff games I can remember when he really did completely take over and carry the team when needed.

The problem is that since his play without the puck is worse than 34 or 16, when he's not locked the f*** in he's a complete liability.

What do you expect berube to say there? He is the coach and not GM. Imagine if he said no as a coach then that destroys marner and tavares as players moving forward.
Exactly. What do people expect here? The guy who's been on the job for 10 months and is getting a big pay-day isn't going to go in front of the world's biggest hockey media and start ripping into management decisions.

What they should be asking Berube about is not player personnel (which he has no control over) or contracts (which he has no control over) and instead they should be asking him what on-ice coaching strategies he has to help The Leafs not lose next time.

I can't believe nobody had the stones to ask Matthews/Berube why if 34 was injured in training camp, the focus was not taking time off and getting healthy for when it mattered? Seems incredibly shortsighted for a franchise with Marner & Tavares on expiring deals.

Don't even get me started on Matthews taking part in 4 Nations when he could have been home resting.

If they ask Berube that he is simply going to say, get better players that will show up when it matters and we can win

What they should have asked is how do you get Matthews and Marner to get to another gear

The Leafs already have 6 dmen signed for next year that are all serviceable dmen. I know everybody is ragging on Rielly and he needs to be better this year, but he's getting more flak then deserved which would've been overlooked if our forwards could score more than a goal or two per night against Florida.

Rielly had a 45pt pace with a large decrease in powerplay time, more goals than Marner or Matthews, and top even strength minutes. The only playoff games where he actually looked really bad were the same ones where the whole team looked terrible. He wasn't great, but he wasn't nearly the biggest problem with this team.

Don't spend more money on defense, focus all spending on putting together the best forward group possible.

Rielly is a train wreck in his own end, though. Guy has no hockey sense whatsoever.

There’s alot of Finnish players left in the playoffs. Are we missing something here with that element ?

Dallas has 5 of them
They beat Team Canada yesterday, which is the only team currently ranked ahead of them.

The (almost) Finn Komarov was probably the last real "go through a brick wall to win" we've had.

Despite it being an absolute slide show of an experience so far, what little we could see of Marner's avail makes it crystal clear that it's he who is done with the Leafs.

he's gone. as I said all year, he decided mentally that he was done with this team / town / market a while ago.
It would be the same demeanor if it was the Leafs treating him as a castaway through the year, and that being a bit upsetting no? Who knows..

It's funny how much prep there was across all players for answering questions about the pressure of playing in Toronto. It's fine, same everywhere, pressure comes from the room.

Heavily discounted JT, on a shot term deal, without a NTC……..
Heavy discount and full NMC with JT go hand in hand. He's taking the discount...to stay in Toronto.

If we don't have any better alternatives right now, and you really want to squeeze him, then lock in a one year at a time deal. Pay by the drink. Also provides flexibility for a potential McD FA.

He ain't giving you a heavy discount to stay in TO, so you can trade him at a big surplus somewhere else because his cap is low.

it's silly to think he will sign so early with the cap going up significantly.

Only way that happens is if he wins a cup
Doubt McDavid is getting too complicated with salary plays.

For him it's more about how many 100s of millions he makes post NHL on his legacy.

How do people want Bennett here after he concussed Knies and Stolarz lol

The guy is a complete piece of shit, dirtiest player in the league since Matt Cooke

And he isn't really THAT good. He would literally be suspended multiple times if he was playing for any other team, he's just a piece of shit that is allowed to get away with being a piece of shit, therefore people think he's effective.
he wins cups.

To Paraphrase Sammy hagar

When we play that slow, the fans don't cheer
I can't get my stars out of 2nd gear.
What used to take 2 rounds now takes all spring
You gotta win 16 to get you a ring

In Florida's last 2 trips to the Finals, Bennett put up the following numbers:

GP G A P
39 12 17 29

So far this playoffs:

GP G A P
13 7 3 10

This is a guy that knows how to elevate his play when it counts.
I'm guessing his stat line in Toronto would look something like:

GP G A P
2 0 1 1

Plays 2 games, suspended the rest of the series as Leafs lose in 7.

Sam Bennett in Toronto would never work, whoever said it on twitter the other day was dead bang on - he'd be suspended every week.

Many people don't understand that his game REQUIRES playing on a team with Bettman privilege.
