Proposal: Carey Price contract?

Even if the bonus is due Sept 1, couldn’t the Habs just pay it now? It’s better for the player if he gets the bonus earlier so the NHLPA wouldn’t object. Bettman would probably need to approve it.
I believe that would be akin to renegotiating a contract, this is strictly forbidden in the CBA

Oh, I know. Like I said, the NHLPA would be unlikely grieve it which is their recourse for things that go against the CBA, since no harm to the player, so if Bettman approves it, I think it could be done. Bettman might see it as opening a can of worms with regard to cap circumvention and the Habs aren’t one of his darlings. Worth making a request though.

So? I made a yes or no statement, so "yes, but not much" is still a yes. It's straight up asinine to think the Habs can shed his cap hit without giving up a sweetener... especially now that we know his bonus isn't paid until September
Why does no one consider that Montreal might take a contract back ? A 4M contract that Montreal has to bury in the AHL would be a win for Montreal, and could be a cost savings for the other team.

Probably because there really isn't anyone that fits that description right now. The bad contracts are guys that are still NHL caliber and most have more than a couple years left, or they are already LTIRetired (like Couture and Vlasic)... I literally just scrolled through ever skater contract and I don't see anyone making 3m or more that isn't at least an NHL caliber player.

And since Price's bonus isn't paid until Sept 1 (and it's not insured), shedding a 4m contract wouldn't save them an money since Price's bonus is 5.5m and insurance doesn't cover the entire base salary either, so there is a portion of that as well, not to mention paying the replacement player on top of that...

So even taking a shitty contract, the Habs will still need to add something.

No there isn't a few teams in that situation. Most teams once they sign their RFAs will over the floor, and the few that aren't are expected to be spenders on July 1.

22/32 team are already over the floor. Of the remaining 10... 4 more would reach the floor by doing no more than filling out their roster with league min. contracts (and this is just to the min. 20-man roster)... so that leaves 6...

KEY UFAs/RFAsNOTES
Flames2.9m18 [$1,550,000]RFAs: Frost, Zary, Bahl
UFAs: None
Hurricanes4.4m19 [$775,000]RFAs: None
UFAs: Orlov, Burns
Contender with room to spend
Blackhawks6.1m20 [$0]RFAs: Kurashev
UFAs: Donato, Martinez
were bigger spenders last summer
Ducks13.8m16 [$3,100,000]RFAs: McTavish, Dostal, Hellesonsaid they no longer will be pinching pennies
Blue Jackets16.4m17 [$2,325,000]RFAs: Voronkov, Tatarsov
UFAs: Provorov, Fabbro
have spent the last couple years, no reason to think they won't this summer
Sharks17m17 [$2,325,000]RFAs: None
UFAs: Georgiev
Last summer they added Toffoli and Wennberg, I suspect this summer they spend a little on defense.

So there is 1 team, that might have issues and that still seems highly unlikely.

Re: the Weber deal... you're ignoring that Utah gave up a decent prospect and a young RFA defenseman as well, so no, Utah didn't "score" anything
I'll assume you're factoring in the cap floor increasing by $5.6 million in 2025-26.
I haven't done any calculations, so I'll trust your work. I Listen to a lot of podcast and heard it suggested as a possibility. I think it was Marco D'Amico, but If I find the source I'll circle back and link it but can't recall off hand.

I didn't think Aku Raty or Victor Soderstrom had any value when they were included in the Weber trade. Their stats look pretty meh but maybe they had more value then I realize.

My numbers are straight off puckpedia, rounded to 1 decimal place
