GDT: End of season media availability - Today

Leafs should have LTIR’d Matthews from the four nations on like Florida did with Tkachuk.

Maybe he’s healthy and you’ve got space for more adds and don’t need to give up so much for Laughton and Carlo to eat salary.

Ah whatever still would have found a way to lose.
Maybe 34 should have skipped the 4 Nations, seem selfish for him to participate with a injury, and apparently MLSE is okay with it. You can’t make this shit up if you tried……..

this is sadly very accurate.

History dictates we will get both Bennet and an again Marchand, and they will both be forced to stop playing the way they have because it will be a constant parade to the box, punctuated by trips to NYC to see DOPS.

the Clarkson effect.

At least, after 95 games of pretty exciting hockey, we can soothe our broken hearts with a dramatic summer of GM second-guessing through July 1 and beyond. we do get a lot of drama for our $
Hypothetically speaking...IF we can re-sign Tavares on a team friendly deal and sign Bennett and Marchand for the same money that Marner would get in the open market, I think we would be in a much better position to go further in the playoffs next season.

Seems like it didn't change his injury at all and people can't seem to comprehend this, you can't make this up if you tried...............................

I feel like management will try and circle back to Mitch to be honest.
Of course they will. They are begging him to sign a stupid deal.

List of excuses:

Took champs to Game 7
Pigman injured
Stolarz injured
Knies injured
So many posts
Leafs don’t play well on Sundays
They all had diarrhea

Run it back

you realize this pressure nonsense didnt come from any of the leaf players? it started from brad Marchand, Paul Maurice and that p***y who ducked a Canadian market Matthew Tkachuk; now everyone is roasting these guys as if they made the comments.

yes i know that.

but our players have also made comments at times about the 'noise' and whatever from fans and media. so it all lumps together. MY thing is if anyone thinks that - then there are issues.

So we are to assume the guy replacing JT will contribute 38 regular season goals, 5 playoff goals be a top 15 face off guy who is also great on the boards. Good times ahead.

Why would you need him to replace JT's production when you still have JT?

On the open market a 2nd. line center makes a tonne more than $6mm, which people are suggesting for Tavares. Heck some say $5mm, which would be a huge discount.

Imagine Tavares for $5mm, and having another $9mm for another player?

We wouldn’t be giving him 11 million again that is for certain. When looking at the playoffs stats, look at them as a whole. This pulling up just a few is not a true indication of anything. Let’s look up cold streaks for everybody over the last season even the last few, pretty sure we could say things like Mathews scored only once in 8 games several times and just ignore the rest of the games,
I did look at them as a whole;

Since coming to the Leafs he ranks 155th in playoff goals per game and 280th all time in points per game (with the production he had for Toronto).

Absolutely beyond abysmal for being one of the highest paid athletes in NHL history.

His point production puts him near such names like Mike Ricci, Shayne Corson, Dan Boyle.

His goal production puts him near such names like Dan Quinn, Ondrej Palat, Sam Bennet.

Oh and now he's older and obviously worse and the Leafs will have less offensive talent next year AND he just came off of 2 goals/0 assists in his last 9 playoff games.

He can come back at a league min or low contract if we can't get anybody else.

Maybe, but sounds like at least one of those players won't sign here, and the best producing player of the bunch is a 38 year old, so you are banking on him repeating.

He provides a ton of value, but then again we need new voices and personsel in the locker room. If we can find a viable replacement for 2C, move off of JT. If not, who's playing in our top 6 behind Matthews ?
Might catch some flack- but Domi has succeeded at C before, and might actually be a better fit for Willy's game speed wise.

One thing about JT....you can laugh at his Johnny Mumbles references, or that's he's too slow, too old, etc...but I genuinely feel he wants to see this thing through. He said he talked to Berube and Tre this morning. He's made, what, $110 million USD in his career? You'll never see him playing guitar outside of Union Station.

I think he wants to win a Stanley Cup in Toronto to cement his legacy. I don't think it's about money anymore. This guy literally gave up the C. He wants a Cup, and feels this is his best chance. I honestly feel he might be willing to sign here for $4 or $5 million. Maybe I'm completely misreading the room, but it's the vibe I'm getting.

Is Nylander still 2RW in this scenario? If he moves to 1RW and Tavares is 2C, who is helping him put up PPG?

The other $9 million dollar player may be Knies (not quite, but close).

Who is the 2RW? Granlund? Not much in free agency and nothing to trade.

Same excuses for them to keep Shanny:eek3:

Matthews could not have been injured very seriously, if at all . He said off season rest will help but avoided rest and rushed back to play in the 4N.
He is not captain material and hopefully no one listens to his nonsense.

yeah. i think JT's only issue is he's getting slower, he never had the best feet. and things are still picking up. but i thnk at a fraction of the cost and less expectation he could still do a lot of stuff for us (in my opinion).

and quite frankly he took less to sign here. he'd take less to sign here. and he'll put in the effort. i can respect that.

when you get asked about the outside noise that the media keeps saying what are you going to reply with? "not focused on the outside noise" sounds good to me, I dont want someone to say "yeah that noise effects us"

If we make the playoffs. Imagine if Matthews gets hurt again during the season.

The difference between how tavares and marner answer the question about wanting to stay is crazy...have to respect how much tavares wants to be a leaf.

Also, i feel like if people are asking your teammates or other players and coaches about something specifically, it must mean its an issue no? So far we've gotten everyone and their mom being asked about the pressure on mitch, auston's lack of production, and auston's leadership as a captain...I feel like we wouldn't need to be asking about this stuff if it clearly wasn't an issue. Smoke, fire...

....but i wasn't defending Marner? I was legit asking a question. I know Nylander sat out, and I know Mitch had a bad contract renegotiation but I don't know/remember if Mitch sat out. that's the only reason why i brought it up. i knew one did, but couldn't remember the other.

Of course you can't play if you are not under contract.

If you have a contract you can play.

This "sitting out" is misleading, Yashin sat out, Nylander was not permitted to play.

Hard to believe we were a Morgan Rielly crossbar with four minutes left, and Nylander/Knies OT breakaway misses from going up 3-0 in that series.

I hate this f***ing game.
Yeah! And we had two breakaways in Game 7 while it was still 0-0. Momentum was on leafs side going into the second and then the ref got clipped, bled all over the f***ing ice and the feel kind of changed. It was a close series.

I agree 100% with your bolded - I don't buy the whole pregnant argument, tbh. My partner and I make like 3% combined what Mitch made this season, and we moved to an entirely new non-English speaking country for work while she has been pregnant in a high-risk pregnancy. So us common folk don't have nearly the same amenities or money or opportunity as Marner, and even then, we consider ourselves fortunate and sufficiently well off to be able to manage these sudden life changes.

Yes, he had a NMC. Yes, it was 100% within his right and remit to exercise it. But let's not bring his 7 month wife's pregnancy as the primary reason for him to choose not to move when hundreds of thousands (or millions) of people need to make such decisions globally with a fraction of the means to do so.
u are both right

when u are rich, you do things are your own pace. He's at a point in his life where no one can tell you what to do and you get everything catered. Mitch had the NMC and used it and said fk off (dont blame him)

As that guy on dangle said, this was all shanahan's fault and they shoulda traded marner before his full NMC kicked in 2 years ago. Dropped the ball there and now the guy is going to walk for nothing. What a mess

Damn i was really hoping to get an understanding of where the disconnect is behind the scenes. There's no way there's a healthy locker room there. My money was on mitch or auston being unlikeable, but with everyone singing theie praises as good people, maybe willy's the locker room cancer lol.

Or im overthinking this.

I can see how his camp is happy to test free agency and how that may ruffle some feathers within management. I'm still just not absolutely certain about that return door being fully shut.

If he wants to explore the market July 1st. it would be difficult for the Leafs to leave the door open when they'd have to pursue the best options on July 1st.

They should have no money left July 2nd./3rd. or they're not doing their jobs.

So in short:

-Berube not throwing anyone under the bus not knowing who will be left over
- Matthews is injured
- Nylander thinks this season was a success and was looking at playing for Sweden while game 7 was going on
- Marner pretty much is gone as his admiration being spoken of in the past tense and Matthews saying he has the right to make his own decision. Cements hes gone
- Knies, Matthews, Nylander speaking highly of Tavares and Tavares already saying he has spoken with Tre and Chief. Hes back as that experienced vet they sign every season (Patches, Thornton, Marleau), but he will come in still producing in a demoted role as a 3rd line C or top 6 winger.
- Reilly saying he hasnt thought about moving right now. Guy is gone.
- Patches is retiring
- Stolarz was concussed bad
- Woll isnt going anywhere.
