GDT: End of season media availability - Today

The way Berube talked about Mitch I think they might grovel at his feet a little bit.
Berube/Shanahan are supposed to be influencing Mitch, Auston and co, but honestly it sounds like the other way around.

Our guys aren't becoming any tougher, the old guys are becoming softer, just sad.

I mean, at the end of the day, if the "pressure" is too much in Toronto, get the f*** out of here. We don't want want you here. Go somewhere where no one gives a shit. You're better off, and so are we.

Seriously. You should be happy to play in a city that cares so much about a team. Get guys in here that know what the crest means, the history behind it, and want to bring a Cup to this city.

These idiots that "threaten" your child on social media, or post your address (is this even true? I've read it on HF, but I don't know if it's legit). They're f***ing lunatics and should be arrested.

What could he really sign that the Leafs wouldn't match?

Also, why would the Leafs let it get that far? They could sign him tomorrow.
Maybe I'm naive and it's because I have a man crush on Knies but if he says he's not interested in offer sheets, I'll take him at his word. Even if someone offers him 10 million, I think he probably comes back to the Leafs and say something like these guys are offering me 10 but I don't want to go, what if we say 8.5 and call it a day.

Most likeable player since ... I don't even know who. I wonder what his ceiling is?

Marner's gone, 0% chance we lose Knies.

If hell froze over and Mitch was back, we'd STILL keep Knies and JT would either be at league min or gone.

Anyways, Marner's gone so 0% chance we lose Knies.

Berube won with Tarasenko/O Rielly as his main offensive guys, no reason Knies can't at least hit that same pedigree.
Without Marner:
Knies-Matthews-Marchesault (likely available)
LW-Bennett (is he available?)-Nylander
Tavares-Domi-Upgrade RW

Find a puck moving D. We didn’t get enough offence from our D against Florida. Goalies the same.

Just pay 8 million to Bennett. At least he'll take someone's goalie out

a lot of media personnel including the ones from Florida admitted that if bennet was a leaf he would be suspended for the antics he pulled with florida while he has ZERO suspensions as a panther

they basically said that the league has different rules/laws for the leafs and non-leafs

I don't blame Marner for leaving. Screwed on his ELC, scapegoated on his next contract, robbed at gunpoint, and someone threatened to kill his newborn child after game 7. He's gone and Toronto doesn't deserve him.
There are nutjobs in every large market unfortunately. He had the opportunity to become one of the most beloved players in Leaf history had he handled himself differently in contract negotiations, regardless of his one ice struggles in the playoffs.

As a father, I do understand that and it's a fair point. As mentioned, it was Dubas' fault for putting Marner in the driver's seat in the first place.

But if the speculation is true that Marner had no intention of re-signing here regardless of money because he got tired of the fan/media scrutiny, it would obviously have helped the organization tremendously if he accepted the trade to Carolina. As a hometown kid and Leaf fan, I thought that should have been part of his thought process.

Ultimately, he exercised his contractual right and put himself and his family first. I accept that. I don't hate him for it, but as a diehard Leaf fan, I can't help but have some resentment as well based on his entire history.
Family is important but he also wouldn't want to quit on his teammates, surprised people would expect him to.

7 years ago Shanny/Dubas fell over themselves to give these guys everything they wanted and more to be our core.

Wrong. Now you earn the honour of the crest to be core. That’s the first change. Management set the tone of how this Blue collar organization plays and what it accepts. Now who wants to be here?

I think we can load up line 1 if we want to, but we really need to spread out the scoring a bit more, especially come playoff time.

Everyone points to Florida, but that is going to be tough to duplicate.

Lundell/Bennett/Verhaeghe/Luostarinen/ERod make under $20 m total, if my math is right. Plus they played pennies for Marchand salary-wise.

I think using Florida as a "model" works, but you need to find those guys to fill those roles. That's the challenge.

Bennett is going to get a big raise. I just hope we aren't the ones ridiculously overpaying.

Leafs should have LTIR’d Matthews from the four nations on like Florida did with Tkachuk.

Maybe he’s healthy and you’ve got space for more adds and don’t need to give up so much for Laughton and Carlo to eat salary.

Ah whatever still would have found a way to lose.

My wife won't but I'll eat 3, maybe 4 day old doughnuts.

Again, if a very good deal you sign Tavares and hope you can land a 2nd. line center.
So we are to assume the guy replacing JT will contribute 38 regular season goals, 5 playoff goals be a top 15 face off guy who is also great on the boards. Good times ahead.

why? Signing it would just show he doesn't really want to be here.

I'd be very surprised if he signs one
The fact he has spoken out against the idea of offer sheets more than once is a message to other teams imo.

Remember it is always up to the player of they sign any unsolicited offer sheets.

I remember Nylander sitting out.
Did Mitch?

I know things were ugly with his dad?
Why is the only defense of Marner "wHaT AbOuT NyLanDeR"?

What about Nylander? He's built very differently to Marner.

You can go back and pinpoint the exact, precise moment Marner went from being this carefree, life-loving free spirit of a player, to this miserable, tight, awkward, defensive personality - it was as soon as he came back from that utterly stupid contract negotiation.

A negotiation that looks even worse when you consider the Marners are local and should know not only what the market is like, but how the pressure of the market can cripple someone like their son who lacks any sort of mental fortitude whatsoever.
