GDT: End of season media availability - Today

Now that it's come out that Marner declined multiple contract extension offers from Treliving and had no intention of re-signing here, it's difficult to not resent him as a fan for refusing to waive his no trade clause at the trade deadline. We could have had Rantanen signed to an 8 year extension for a 12 million AAV but Marner was too selfish to let that happen and now we'll have nothing to show for it after he walks.

He did have a pregnant wife. Just something to consider. And I am not really trying to defend him

END OF SEASON AVAIL - Chris Tanev

  • On the pressures of playing in Toronto - has played in Canada for 14 and a half years. It comes with the territory of playing in a country where hockey is the biggest sport.
  • Says there's a lot more microphones and cameras compared to calgary. Says Vancouver can get quite big as well, especially when the team is doing well, says it's just as much pressure there. Doesn't think he can pinpoint anything that's the same or different. Every place is different. Says it's Canada, and hockey is Canada's game and there's pressure.
  • On his brother being a free agent this summer - doesn't know if the team wants him to come or if he wants to come here (LOL), and will be something that twill be addressed down the road if that ever happens. Has never played with his brother.
  • On Mitch - smart player. Does everything on the ice. PP, PK, top line opposition, scoring at even strength. Special player, extremely smart. Really good person. Not sure what's going to happen, but that will be resolved between him and the team. Hopes he comes back
  • On all the blocked shots and how he plans to recover - wants to decompress, spend time with his kids, and enjoy the sunshine. Will start to formulate a plan on what the summer is going to look like.
  • On how he feels physically - GREAT
  • On being hit more than anyone else in the playoffs, and whether he felt the Panthers were targeting him - would have to ask them. When you go back and get a lot of pucks and break out pucks, you're going to get hit a lot.
  • On his injury this year - on where the sternum met his clavicle.
  • On what he learned from Auston in his first year as captain - first and foremost, he wants to win. Plays extremely hard. Competes everywhere on the ice, and works extremely hard off the ice. Only going to grow as a captain and a player.
  • On the calmness that he brought to the team to help them get better - feels he's pretty calm off the ice, and thinks that translates to his game on the ice. Doesn't try to overthink the game. Was a smaller kid growing up, so wasn't able to be physical, so he didn't always throw checks as much as he would have liked, so learned to play more with the puck.

i hope for the leafs sake they trade marners rights for something before free agency starts, letting walk for nothing would be a huge kick in the face
Getting a 3rd or a 4th for the rights is basically nothing. Who cares at this point. It's done, he gave the Leafs 9 years of service, time to move on.

and whats the point... just to negotiate earlier? you can't get 8 years from anyone other than Toronto.

His management team/family has ruined this guys image and career from season 4 on. Its a real shame, because he was loved and would have been the poster boy.

Yes we could’ve had Rantaneen but do we know if he would’ve signed with us past the playoffs? Isn’t that why the canes traded him? He didn’t want to sign there because that’s not where he wanted to play.

I don't know that he never intended to re-sign, he just had an idea of what he could get paid, just like last time, and they never got there. Then when they asked him to waive he might have seen the writing on the wall and the failure to launch in round 2 cemented things. I wonder if his wife wasn't extremely pregnant he maybe takes the Carolina trade?

They are, but a bad wrist would affect it more, I think. It might also rule out the shoulder, as well.

Also, the lack of surgery also makes it seem like a back.

We shall see I guess. If his decline is permanent we will be second guessing the treatment and management of timelines.

Matthews injury is back. The ups and downs comment. The fact that it affected a bunch of aspects of his game. Most importantly….no surgery.

I read it more as he was done with the fans, the media, the franchise, but didn't want to bail on his team. I get that...but shit, if he REALLY wanted to do everyone a solid without being resentful about it, he'd be playing the Leafs tonight with Rantanen on Matthews' flank.

If and when Marner leaves (most likely this summer), I don't see him ever being given a hero's welcome anywhere in Toronto EVER again. That really sucks because it's his hometown. Had he just accepted the damn trade, even if he and the Hurricanes knocked off the Leafs in the ECF, I'm pretty sure fans and everyone would let bygones be bygones within a season or two.

This is on Dubas for giving these no move contracts. The player cannot be blamed for exercising his contractual right

It was reported from multiple sources that Rantanen was prepared to sign long term in Toronto if he got traded to the Leafs.

I suppose if we needed Rantanen it could have been a Knies package as also reported. Doesn’t make you feel better but it didn’t have to just be Mitch. Probably not worth dwelling on.
well when Marner refused 8x13.5... yeah, you try and move him and not the guys you plays hard and says he isn't going anywhere in Knies
