Elvis Merzlikins: "I'm not a backup, I will not be a backup"

Reading some of the know-nothing comments here you'd think Elvis wasn't by far the best goalie on the Jackets. You'd think he isn't currently outperforming most of the starters in the NHL.

It is genuinely, genuinely weird that he is not the starting goalie right now. HF Jackets does not have an explanation for it. It's not performance.

Can uhh Jarmo let him play so we can all see how great he is? Or we just gonna have to go on “trust me bro”

So Oilers will get Elvis now??
I know you're stupid joking but the Oilers are getting good goaltending so why would they acquire a guy who will be a cancer if he doesn't start?

One answer would be if Campbell goes the other way but I doubt the Oilers want to mess with their mojo too much right now by adding a guy that just added a bunch of question marks to his character.

Its really simple

A poster named Artemi Panarin comments that a contract, and it doesnt matter who's, is 'aging like milk' - yet the Rangers have had no major success since signing Panarin to a top-5 paid contract

Therefore, its like someone who is a drug addict making fun of someone for being an alcoholic; its hyperbolic to the point of being hypocritical. Funny for me though lol

Im sure Rangers owner Dolan is happy hes paying major (top5) money to a guy who disappears when the going gets tough; meanwhile this poster is worried about Columbus overpaying a goalie during a rebuild lmao
It's really simple... that this an extreme stretch just to justify Merzlikins horrible contract (or criticize Panarin's, not sure which) in one of the weirdest arguments I've ever encountered on this board. Which is saying a lot.

If the poster you responded to wasn't named after Panarin, you would have no need at all to respond in the first place lol

There’s gotta be something else going on, playing wise, Elvis has by far been the best goalie this year

I don't really think it's that difficult. He may be the best goalie but his attitude is obviously extremely shitty regardless of his or other BJs goaltender play. He should just keep his mouth shut publicly, even after his decent run of 20 decent games especially given the season he had last year.

Merzlikins, for goalies who played at least 20 games so far this season, has the 13th best save percentage in the entire league (while playing for Columbus, to boot. Columbus isn‘t exactly a powerhouse…). If that‘s not worthy of a #1 goalie, I don‘t know what is.
Being the highly competitive guy, I perfectly understand how he‘s not happy with what‘s going on. I don‘t know what Columbus is thinking when they make him the number 3 goalie in the team, tbh.

Is he though? He’d be an upgrade for a number of teams in the playoff hunt, but that contract obviously is going to make teams cautious.
Yes, this is the 3rd season in a row that he's not played at a starter level. Low-end starter at best.

His sv% is better than league average while facing higher danger chances than most goalies behind a trash defense. He is a positive 1 on goals saved above average. He has been a decent starter this year. Tarasov and Martin have not.

This strikes me as an incredibly stupid thing for Merzlikins to say, publicly. His agent or wife or someone needs to give him a good, hard slap.

There was talk in Edmonton (among media pundits, anyway) of the Oilers trying to acquire him as the alternate to Skinner. Maybe it'll still happen, but I'm sure a bunch of teams -- who might have been willing to start him out as the back-up and see how it went -- are now crossing him off the list.

Looking at his career stats, he's been pretty solid (it seems... I don't watch Columbus. Does anyone?), with the exception of last season. So, if you're an NHL GM, wondering if the guy can bounce back fully from last season's injuries, the very last thing you want to hear is the athlete putting the cart before the horse and declaring himself a #1 or else.

I hope it works out for him, or it's going to be:
Viva Las-AHL! Viva Las-AHL!
It may not look best, but he's not wrong and right to be upset. He has outplayed Martin and parasol by a huge margin. Easily. And yet randomly got demotednfrom starter anyway- and actually healthy scratched to being the 3rd stringer when Martin has been garbage. His play didn't deserve a demotion as he rebounded from last year and it's not like the other guys beat him out.

Maybe he had attitude problem or conflict behind scenes that led to him being healthy scratched cuz it makes no sense otherwise.

This Presley tribute act is sounding almost Georgiev-like in his delusion. Nothing matters but results.

I don’t get why Columbus scoffs at the idea of Jack Campbell. The coach and organization obviously prefers sub .890 save percentages on the Club with the playing of Tarasov/Martin over Elvis for some mysterious reason. Jack can provide that, he’d fit right into their organizational strategies.

That’s not their organizational strategy for the next following 3 years.

Just looked at the numbers and a lot different than what I was expecting. Elvis has a solid 907 Save% playing behind a terrible team and by far the best numbers of three goalies who have all played behind the same defense. What's the logic in having him as the 3rd goalie?

For the people criticizing Elvis what is your reasoning for thinking he isn't justified in being angry about being the 3rd goalie?

Any goalie who is playing at a starter caliber (which he is) is going to be upset about it. The issue with Elvis is just a lack of tact. He does have rather grandiose ideas in general but I don't think this latest issue is necessarily because of that. It's a genuinely odd situation he's been put in where he's benched in favor of .880 goalies.

I’ve never considered the guy anything more than a 1B at best. He needs to do more to backup this type of talk.

Is it though? i mean, the guy in your name has as many seasons past the first round as Merzlikins does and Elvis doesnt make 11+mil

Sheesh - it seems personal reflection is lost on many sports fans when wanting to take the piss
Are you actually trying to insinuate that Panarin isn't worth his contract because his team hasn't won enough rounds? :biglaugh:
