Whether he's worth 11.6M or not is irrelevant at this point. We've hinged our bets on him and he isn't getting traded. So the best course of action is figuring out whatever way helps make him a better player for us.
People spend most of the day talking about Benning who has been gone for years.

I think talking about a contract that lasts 8 years and started this year is relevant.

He absolutely can and should be traded if his on ice play and body language continue.

I want him to play like he has the potential to but this version of him that’s been here almost half a season needs to shape up or be shipped out.

How unfair is his current play to Miller, Hughes, Boeser and Garland who show up 80-90% of the time? Can’t have a financial and production boat anchor around people who are trying to win.

10 more games of his Naslund impression and start shopping him.

If Petey is supposed to play elite now
every game because of his paycheck , how do you explain McDavid and Draisitle getting shut out ?

The sooner something distracts this city away from Petterson , the sooner this will turn around. Throwing as much negative energy as you can at it will just make it worse and worse.

BTW, i think he played fine. He played better than Mcdrai.

lol. Large sample size...
Drai was questionable to even play Game 2 in the playoffs because he was hurt and exhausted. How did he manage to put up 14 points against Canucks while supposedly knee injured Petey completely vanished not only during the playoffs, but half the season leading up to it.

Certain players ask for the money and have the mentality to do what it takes to get the job done.

Any more excuses?
I'm pretty sure he was going to turn it around as soon as he signed and those contract extension distraction was over.
Maybe he can go somewhere with no fans so they're be no negative energy.

Miller went pretty much a full year being bad during the Covid season.

He also had a terrible 50 game stretch of poor defensive performances in the 2022-2023 season until Tocchet arrived. Meanwhile Pettersson (and if you want references of the games I’m talking about I can give them to you) single-handedly won us games we had no business being in. That whole year he was an absolute two-way beast and finished with Selke votes on a bottom league team. Yet somehow this fanbase selectively ignores this fact.

The last 3 years his most consistent linemates have been: Mikheyev, Lafferty, Kuzmenko, Hoglander, Chiasson, Beauvillier, Sprong, Podkolzin, and now Debrusk. No other $11M player has linemates anywhere close to this level. Yet Kuzmenko, Mikheyev, Beauvillier have all had or were projected to have CAREER seasons playing beside Pettersson, and I’m not even counting Hoglander who himself also had a career year but admittedly played up and down the line up.

Petey has had 5 5+ point games. Draisaitl and Kucherov have had 6. Mackinnon 7. McDavid/Crosby/Malkin have more than 8.

He has 413pts in 407 games. there are only 11 players with a career PPG at the moment in the NHL.

I agree the last 40 games (6g, 17a, 23pts) he’s been dogshit. Tendinitis, contract, mental/confidence etc has played a large part in his current struggles, but the amount of disrespect he’s had by our fanbase is completely and disproportionately disingenuous.

I am obviously talking about this season. If you want to judge Petey over 1 or 2 games then its only fair to judge all of the other big money players over 1 or 2 games.

Mackinnon got drubbed 8 to 4 and went scoreless. Mcdavid and Drai got drubbed 6 nothing. Its almost like getting a big paycheck doesn't automatically translate into goals and points every gameday. What are we even talking about

I don't think anyone's judging Petey over 1 or 2 games. We're judging based on this being a long continuation of last season.
This isn't game 1 or 2 for Petey, this is like... game 50-60, or whatever. We lost count now.

For sure, but what we are asking is to reset the timer to 2 games played, which I think based on his career so far, he has earned

going back to February 1st when this started, including the 13 playoff games he has 10 goals and 33 points in 50 games

guy hasn't been the same since he came home from that 7 game road trip in January last year

been along time since he has been any kind of difference maker, and he looks exactly the same this season to start, as he did last season to finish

Since taking over as GM Allvin hasn't made very many contract mistakes.....and when he has dropped the ball with guys like Kuzmenko and Mikheyev, he moves swiftly to rectify it.

But even Houdini couldn't get out from under this contract hit and term for Pettersson. They're stuck with each other, unless you could trade him for another $10-$11m under-achieving player., And what would be the point of that?

One thing is for certain. If the last 50 games or so is all they're going to get out of Pettersson, then this team really has no chance of winning anything.

I think trading Kuzmenko was a bad idea. He was the perfect linemate for Pettersson’s game. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Petey had his best season while playing with Kuzmenko and started to struggle after his departure.

Perhaps, but the facts were he was pretty lost in the other two zones, 5.5 million for that during playoff time is bound to cause headaches.

But you’re right they had great chemistry together. Like filthy

And also a bonus Pettersson rookie clip

Yeah Kuzmenko isn’t flawless but that season him and Petey lead the forwards in plus minus regardless.

For what he brings to the table, I think 5.5 million is more than worth it.

People that are the highest paid are leaders and relied on to be as such. You don’t get to be the CEO and blame the VP of OPS that you suck at your job.

If he wanted to play like a janitor he should have been paid like one. God forbid people expect more of him.

At 11.6M he is expected to make the players around him better. Why is that so hard to understand?

If you need the best players around you to make you better you simply aren’t worth 11.6M
Hes not a CEO.

He is a highly trained specialist trying to maintain a nuclear reactor with janitors.

This looks like a completely different player from what we're seeing now... look at his celebration too. It's like the guy lost all his confidence and love for the game WTF

There was a time where if he got a chance like this I'd be surprised if he didn't score or at least make an incredible play that just didn't quite work.

Now I'd be surprised if he didn't just get caught by a back-checker and fall down instead.

And it sounds like exaggeration but it's kind of actually not lol.

Well Boeser and Miller turned it around. Took more than 50 games

We loved 40 when he ripped it up with Quinn in the first few months of last season, putting us in a great position down the stretch when he disappeared.

He just got benched for the first time - I think- let’s see how he responds.

He can’t be a cheat code every night.

The number of people who think we should trade Pettersson is quite frankly insane.

This is a player, who in a down year last season, still put up 89 points and was top 20 in the league in scoring. All this while playing as you said, with the likes of players like Mikheyev and Lafferty. Petey doesn't even get to play with the best winger on this team.

Meanwhile look at who other top centers get to play with.

Hughes gets to play with Bratt.

Hintz gets to play with Robertson.

Matthews gets to play with Marner.

MacKinnon gets to play with Rantanen.

Barkov gets to play with Tkachuk.

Point gets to play with Kucherov.

McDavid gets to play with Draistaitl.

Every single other All-star calibre center in this league gets to play with an All-star caliber winger.

Meanwhille Petey gets to play with f***ing Lafferty, Mikheyev or Sprong, and people are up in his ass about not being able to produce as well as someone who gest to play with Leon f***ing Draisaitl as a winger.

If you look at last year's line-ups, there's not a single all-star calibre center that has played with a worse set of wingers than Petey had. He's the only center that doesn't get to play with wingers of his own calibre.

Yes.

Let the hate flow through you.

Lets drive him away.

And then IF Quinn Hughes signs a contract where he gets paid what he is worth, lets drive him away also.

But he (according to some enthusiastic posters) faked a knee injury and also does not make passionate facial expressions!

So hah. Check mate.

The difference is Benning kept chasing diminishing assets with no real plan. Despite a down season by his standards, Pettersson is still leaps and bounds better than anything Benning did. He gambled on guys like Eriksson, Gudbranson, Sbisa and Vey. Allvin "gambled" on a 25 year old who in the past two seasons put up 191 points in 162 games while playing with mostly dogshit.

My point is there's no use wringing our hands over his contract. We signed him, so now we have to figure out what helps make him that 100 point player again.

As for trading him. In such hypothetical, we're essentially telegraphing to the whole league we gave up on one of our star players literally in the first season of his new contract. You don't think they'll have the same concerns we did and thus, lowball us?

"Just clear his salary!" And do what with it? Give it to Marner? It's not like there's players of Pettersson's caliber rushing to free agency. Not to mention, how likely do you think they'd be to sign here if we gave up on Petey that quickly?

Regardless, they're not shopping in ten games or at all this season. Nor do I think they should. Let's give the guy a chance to play with some actual talent. Not everyone clicks right away.
