Basically equal offensively? Hughes had more goals in his age 21 season than Pettersson has ever had. He had 336 shots last year, Pettersson has never had more than 257.

The number of players better than Hughes by a “substantial margin” is very small, and he ain’t one of them.
Pettersson had more points.

Not sure why Devils fans have such a hard time with Petey being better.

Still salty that they were wrong when they insisted Hischier was better, I guess.

You really can’t go wrong with either, as I said before. Contracts are going to be the deciding factor between these 2 players.

And Pettersson had 102 points last year, more than Hughes has ever had. Since when are shot totals the metric that people use to determine who is a good offensive player? Is Timo Meier better than Nikita Kucherov?

You have two ~100 point Cs. One of them is mediocre defensively and doesn't even take his own faceoffs while the other is in Selke range. It shouldn't be hard to figure out who the better player is.

In his age 24 season vs Jack’s age 21 season. Pettersson literally wasn’t even a PPG player the two seasons before. Salty? Check the poll.

Yeah, getting significantly more shots off per game matters. Jack Hughes likely won’t have another season in his career under 30 goals barring injury because of this and won’t have to shoot 17% to do this.

The claim the Pettersson is better than Hughes is perfectly defensible. Substantially better? No, that is just stupid.

Pettersson also sucks at faceoffs, what was that comment about? Lol. Jack has improved in that area over the offseason, they likely aren’t that far off this year.

Shot totals is like #58 on the list of best ways to evaluate/compare players.

They're similar offensively. Pettersson is *WAY* better defensively. That makes him substantially better overall. I'd also say that Hischier is substantially better than a 37 y/o Malkin for the same reasons despite similar production.

Yeah, it’s best to just make vague appeals to being “better defensively” and then just looking at point totals to compare offense.

Pettersson finished 7th in Selke voting while playing on a non-playoff team. He kills penalties. He takes his own faceoffs. He's one of the most dangerous SH players in the NHL. He and Hischier are probably going to dominate Selke voting for the next 5-7 years. There's nothing 'vague' about it. He's a f***ing fantastic defensive C, and Hughes isn't even close.

I think comparing point totals generated in similar roles is a pretty decent way to compare offense, no? The only way it wouldn't be is if there was a huge difference in linemate quality, but that's not the case.

You do realize this poll is for who you would rather have moving forward right? Hughes is winning because of Pete's impeding contract status and being older.

Most people believe EP is overall better because he has him beaten in better player polls before.

Ep has worked on his face-off skills so "he sucks at it" claims won't hold up for much longer now.

Ep > Hughes as a player. Get over it.

Hughes is already just as good as him, fairly obviously. Would you bet on him having more than 108 goals 257 points in 254 games from age 21-24?

Based off of nothing when EP has a better complete game. Focusing on just goal scoring is pure coping. I also like how you conveniently ignore the other posts directed at you.

I'm going to use my uno reverse card on this since another Canuck fan is being difficult about Jack Hughes getting 99 points and not 100 points.

If player is not a finalist of a award you can't say anything about them being a "candidate" for it.

Hughes basically got 100 points but Pettersson wasn't even close to being a 40 goal scorer (also Jack is practically a 50 goal scorer)

Am I doing it right?

Lol @ these arguments. The difference between them as who’s better right now is so small, what are we even arguing about? There’s no wrong or right, it’s opinionated. Some people defend these players like they’re one of ur family members.
They're both outstanding. Good post.

Agreed, It is a small gap but even stating your preference within that small gap gets people jumping on you.

for me personally I prefer Hughes so I said Hughes>Pettersson. Some people see that and instantly think I'm saying Hughes>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Pettersson. That's what happened to me there are definitely other fans have reacted same manner when someone prefers Pettersson.

Jack Hughes winning, Im so sorry

Oh I see what you mean...there was a typo...regardless...read above, edited.

Jack is still winning....not close
Yes, good for him. He's considered more valuable given his contract status and being younger.
Nothing more.

Most consider EP to the better player. Both are in the same tier as of now.
