Elias Pettersson: Double down or sell?

The comparison is horrible. Petey has proven his ceiling is far above PLD.

i don’t think Elias is declining, he’s always been a 65-70 point guy who just had 2 fluke seasons.

I was bringing up his inflated on-ice shooting % in his 100 point season when Canucks fans were calling him a top 10 NHL center.

They didn't want to hear it.

I think he can get back to being 80-90 point guy which will probably be alright for his salary. Just probably won't ever be a bargain.

Maybe it's possible he hits 100 points again in a season, but it's clearly not going to be his new normal season which his fans were kind of expecting.

Pay attention to shooting % data boys and girls.
 
This Canucks team has a pretty high floor, as evidenced by them being still in a playoff spot with basically everything going against them this year, but they don't have a high ceiling. That was apparent last year even when everything went right.

The Canucks might as well rebuild if you can't get Pettersson to be a top 15 center in the league. He played like one tonight, but 90% his games in the past calendar year he's been 2C quality and sometimes worse. Still, without elite talent, you can't win.

Sure they have Hughes, but they need at least 1 more star. Anything you trade Pettersson for will be a package of lesser quality players. Even if you think there's 20% chance Pettersson becomes a consistent 90+ point guy again, it's better than the odds you'll be able to trade or acquire one in before Hughes has to decide if he stays or goes.

Find a way to motivate him. Find a way to set him up for success and then hope he gets his groove back.
 
He had 100pt season just 2 years ago and he’s still only 26. Unless he has a serious injury that he’s not likely to recover from 100% I’d still think there’s a good chances he’s a #1 center. Only problem is that $11.6AAV contract is scary if he doesn’t regain his form.


I just find it hard to he’s suddenly not an elite player anymore for no apparent reason.

I think if you trade Petterssen, and the return isn't substantial, you might as well cross of Quinn Hughes as being able to be re-signed in two more years, because he will leave.

Rutherford needs to start building team around the core he has. He should re-sign Boeser and try real hard to figure out how get some more forward talent on the team.

I think the problem is that even at his peak, Pettersson isn’t someone you gameplan against or change your system/lines up to get someone away from him or get someone on him in a playoff series. Hughes is a guy that disrupts your set up, Pettersson you keep your existing set up and just tell your guys to pay extra attention to him if he’s on a hot streak.

I think you're pretty close. He's kind of like Huberdeau. Who was 100+ points with Barkov as a center. I would think Petey is a guy who needs a solid centerman to play with, like he used to with Horvat and (when they weren't fighting) Miller.
 
Are people here even talking about the right EP? Healthy and happy, the guy is a superstar. He's played centre most of his career, and he hasn't had Horvat as his center very often.

For reasons nobody really knows, he's been in a bad funk. He hasn't been dealing guys out, skating all that well, or shooting the puck anything like he's capable. But unless there is a physically unfixable issue, he's bound to find his game again. I have a feeling he'll catch fire once he comes back from the 4 nations. The vibe around the team has changed, and I think the nucks will get on a roll with the new dmen and the added speed up front.

Pretty ridiculous that the guy with the 6th highest AAV in the league has been shit for over a year now because the vibes are off.

They should trade him. With a contract like that you’ve gotta be bringing it every night. Especially in the playoffs.
 
Unless there's another similarly talented player also going through struggles, they'll always lose a trade shipping him out. There's only so many teams that would be able to accommodate that kind of contract this season as well, so it doesn't make a lot of sense to trade him.

It is looking more and more like he fleeced the Canucks in that deal though.

Hitting the reset button with Quinn Hughes a player you will likely not see the caliber of back in the door is a choice. Stick it out with him and re-evaluate.
