Tocchet has openly scoffed at the notion he's injured. He's not hurt in any significant way.
Apparently his amount/pace of speed bursts is dramatically down from two years ago, and his shot speed has dropped.

Do you assume these are because he just doesn't 'want' it enough?

Nothing and no one has given any indication he’s still injured. Not even rumors. I can guarantee you if it comes out he has been playing injured those of us calling him out for his poor play will course adjust and rip into the coaching staff loudly
They said so on Sportsnet. I don't remember who it was, but they played a clip of him flicking it from the corner when he chased down the puck. Before he would have drove to the net. An uninjured Petey would have done that even with a guy on him. They showed another clip too of him out of character.
But if you and the others are waiting for something official, I suppose I can ride it out and wait. In sports, and especially in hockey, there always been a culture of not admitting to injuries like lauding Gordie Howe for playing after a literal brain injury...helmetless. I'm convinced to this day that big reason Pavel sat while demanding a trade was rest his knee.

what happened to his foot speed?

In-ju-ry. Beyond whatever else is going on with him, by looking at those clips you can clearly see it, without a doubt. He can still sometimes get there in spurts, but I wonder what it costs him.

Yeah, the one he wasn't held out of the lineup for at any point, even late in the season when they had the chance?
What is the point of sitting out a player for a few games if he has an injury that takes an indeterminate amount of time, at least months, to heal? He still isn't healed after a full summer off, as he stated in training camp. More than one thing can be true at the same time - a guy being in his own head and also not being physically all there, either.

I think its 100% between the ears. Its also because apparently he is unwary enough to actually read what me, you, and the other 200 armchair GMs think about him online, and and if he misses Taj's tweet about him last night at 1am while he is sitting on his porcelain throne, his good friends will forward to him that, and the outrageous jewels of wisdom that we sling at each other on twitter/X. Freakin paragons of good sense those friends of his turn out to be.

Petey, if you're reading this. Do your dekes or take a nap instead.

Wrister and slap shot are gone.
Ability to deke and pivot out of tight quarters is gone.
His playmaking ability is half of what it used to be.
The biggest concern is his lack of chemistry with teammates. He was able to really sync up with guys like Boeser and Miller but now fails to read of those two in any situation.
The creativity is gone too. He used to make these crazy behind the back passes, or looks to be icing the puck only to have a linemate catching up to it for a scoring chance. Nowadays its mostly just dump it in the corner or make the obvious pass. Last night against the Canes, they were able to pick off a few of those passes because it was so obvious and telegraph.

Again this is probably a confidence issue, but its depressing watching those old highlights and wondering where our elite 1C has gone, if he will come back, and if/when he will be gone again in the future.

I’d love to see the same numbers from
20-21 when he came out totally useless when totally healthy that year.

The whole point is that he’s not competing and not moving his feet. No shit you don’t go fast when you don’t move your feet.

Do you actually think that he’s legit hurt but that everyone in the organization is choosing to deny it and openly criticize his play instead?

And even if he was slightly hurt, I don’t give a shit. It doesn’t excuse this level of performance, or anything close.

Starting the new year he put up 14 goals in 13 games.

and then after the all star break he put up 7 goals in his last 33 games, carrying into this season that's now 8 goals in his last 41 games.

For those that are suggesting he’s injured, is this the same injury from February?

I have no clue what it is, or if it even is an injury. Was simply pointing out the speed burst thing is the only possible evidence of an injury, given literally no one on the team has suggested an injury.

Regardless, even in the hypothetical world where that is a legitimate injury, it's not remotely close to explaining how a 25 year old former 100 point, 40 goal scorer is struggling to put up a 40 point pace while seeing first unit powerplay time.

Any injury that's hampering a player to THIS degree would be something the player would sit out for at some point. It's either a minor injury that he can work through, in which case he should be looking better than he is, or it's a serious enough injury that it renders you practically lifeless on the ice, and therefore something that he probably shouldn't be playing through.

You're right that both can be true, and I've already said that I can see there potentially be something nagging him, but most people agree this is mostly mental. If it was mostly physical or even 50/50 you can be sure the team would be more outwardly proactive.

ASG. I remember pretty clearly. A bunch of us were wondering what the hell happened during the break. In fairness it wasn't just directed at Petey at the time. It was the PP and the team in general. Though the team sort of figured it out and Petey's struggles have persisted.

I just recently found out that Granlund had off ice issues that really affected his game for a couple years. He has now moved passed it and has became a very productive player again. I'm not speculating or starting rumors here, but it could potentially be a reason players struggle on the ice. Sometimes we forget that these are human beings with real life problems too, and can have it impact their work just like the rest of us.

Either way, hope for the best for Petey.

Oh I haven't forgotten. Going back to last year I've said that something happened to him personally that kinda wrecked him (seemingly). I've been hard on him but I've never been under the impression he's just a guy who stopped playing or doesn't give a shit or has major character issues. It's something very specific that's going on, I really believe that.

I just remember it seemed like it happened overnight

It was the craziest contrast I have seen almost instantly.
So looks like he had 60 points in 48 games before the all-star game

Then put up 29 points after…… woof
