Wondering what his value is? Elliotte Friedman alluded to Arizona potentially wanting to trade him given lack of picks and not being competitive. Might go through a full rebuild...by the time they are ready, he will be past his prime. At 7 years left at 8.25M it’s a good cap hit for the type of player he is but it’s a lot of money for a team like Arizona. Their owners are in the casino business so not exactly booming right now ...wondering what his value is around the league?

for the habs, I think he would be a great fit. Weber and Petry on the right. OEL on the left...

Habs offer:
1st round pick 2020
1st round pick 2021
Karl Alzer (4.5M cap hit left for 2 years but only 6M owed)
Poehling

if Poehling isn’t enough, maybe replace him with Max Domi? Thoughts? My I’m way off but Arizona instantly gets back in the first round for next 2 drafts and they pick up young roster player.

max Domi seems done in Montreal. Just no longer a fit and the upgrade their defense big time with OEL.

Weber - OEL
Petry - Chiarot
Romanov - Kulak

is a really good defense.

Seems pretty fair.

Keep Poehling in there. Trade Domi to recoup some of the draft capital spent.

I think his cap hit is okay, but it’s double as long as he will be worth it.

He might be an $8 mil a year defenceman for 4 more years, not 8.

His last 4 years are gonna be a huge anchor. I think you’d have to retain a bit, or take a medium term crappy contract back to facilitate a great return on him.

That’s pretty fair for both teams value wise. I’m not convinced Montreal should be looking in that direction though.
I think we should be. MB is not going to rebuild this team with Price and Weber. We are basically forced to try and compete and retool. We also have a ton of picks the next two drafts. Hab's fans have been preaching rebuild for years now but we have a monkey running the organization so there really isn't much we can do but to try and improve this team whether we like it or not and it sucks but it is what it is.

This deal would cripple MTL for years. I like OEL, but he is not worth giving up the farm for at that cap hit in a flat cap world. The picks they give up would be players ready to step in just when OEL, Weber and Price are in decline. Without these assets MTL will be stuck with with 25 million in dead-cap space with limited help on the way.
This offer is way too generous to a team on the ropes with limited options. I am sure teams are circling but that is one first to much.

Arizona fan saying it’s fair. I don’t love it. I don’t hate it. I think it’s fair.
How does trading OEL for an all futures package sit with Arizona fans. I understand attendance can be an issue. Is OEL recognizable enough for there to be value in keeping him? Does a trade like that risk losing fans from an already small fan base?

Nice for the Habs so after this trade they have 33% of cap held between one goalie, and two Dmen. Oh and wait for it the contracts do not end before 25-26 ! That seems greeeeeeat....

It's two first round picks and a b prospect, hardly giving up the farm.

Taking away Alzner, that’s a big payment for OEL. 2 x 1st AND Domi?
I feel like habs could get same type of players for less elsewhere (Brodin, etc)
Habs need an elite finisher and by giving all of those assets up just for OEL would be counterproductive imo

It’s the adding a 8.25 million dollar 29 year old defenceman with 8 years of term to their already aging core that will hurt. That is 25 million tied up up until 2026 with price and Weber.
So what? Habs need to do something different it's been 8 years since mb has been our gm that's almost a damn decade of pure utter shit. We can't rebuild so might as well try and retool properly instead of doing shitty bargain bin deals like always happens. If we fail it's whatever at least Weber price and oel are off the books around the same time.

I have this feeling the Flames are going to trade for OEL this off-season. Gio is older and slowing down and he needs someone who can take over some tough minutes.

Flames need to sign RD's, not LD's. And they don't have that much cap space. Only two guys signed are Giordano, Hanifin, and Andersson. Also need to sign a goalie too.

Flames trading for OEL fits in terms of a team need for the future but not in terms of salary cap.

Does OEL turn MTL into a contender or would that 8.25 be better spent on Hall to add some scoring and keep the assets. If you are keen on the defenceman then why not buck up for Krug or Petro and keep the assets. These players are all similar age to OEL.

Agreed. Habs have a deep prospect pool too so yeah, this puts a dent in it but helps the Coyotes in the direction they want to take. Habs get OEL, lose 3 valuable futures but also unload Alzner.

* Alzner = Marleau in terms of cap hit/money to be paid. So that's one of the 1st's
* OEL for another 1st and Poehling. A player who is trending in the wrong direction with a big contract

This is not a bad option for both teams IMO. OEL does much better on the Habs mix of D and would not be expected to lead. He also helps our PP.
