At this point this trade seems inevitable.

Karlsson wants to go to a contender. Dubas wants him out. Carolina needs a top pairing RHD that can drive offense.

I assume the deal would be essentially...

Walker most likely or Chatfield.

2026 Dallas 1st

Some minor prospect

For

Erik Karlsson at 7.5 mil

Is EK a Brind’ Amour of player?

Big difference between how Burns plays and EK.
Not sure it's that dramatic. Burns was useless defensively in his last years in San Jose. Burns is clearly larger and more physical, Karlsson is much more mobile at this point in their careers. As others are noting, offensively inclined dmen have been fine under Brindamour. Karlsson would probably do best in a man system and Slavin is the most capable partner that he could have.

Skjei - Pesce was strong enough of a pair to split or take the majority of the shutdown minutes, freeing up the coaches to provide Hamilton/DeAngelo/Burns even more protection beyond being paired with Slavin.

Without them, the coaches had to rely on the Slavin pair more and look at how the fanbase views Burns now. That reliance will continue into next season with a rookie Nikishin below him.

1st pair offensive RD is not a certainty. Gostisbehere is under contract. Nikishin produced in the KHL. Morrow is in the mix as well.

The thought of giving away good assets for EK,
at the same time I'm already looking forward to not having a defensive anchor like Burns in our top-4, is displeasing.

I'd rather not, even if EK were free...which he would not be.

I think EK would be fine next to Slavin and probably has more left in the tank than it seems on that Pittsburgh roster. He’s certainly better than whatever Burns is at this point.

That said, no chance at Morrow. Zero. Zilch. Definitely don’t think Carolina would liquidate a 1st. And yeah it probably would be Walker not Chatfield who is seemingly sneaky important to the Canes.

Walker and Dallas' 2026 1st for Karlsson at $5 million after the bonus is paid looks pretty reasonable to me.
I'd agree to that, but trade protection would have to be waived from both sides.

And, I don't see Walker wanting to go from cup contender to a rebuild. I could be wrong.

Players especially defensemen look like shit on bad teams. Players especially defensemen look great on good teams.

feel like Karlsson would look great on Carolina and I wonder what that looks like. The upside is still so high.

So Carolina gets to upgrade from Walker to Ek and will only add 1.4 mil to their cap while the pens take on walker for 4 more years and between walkers cap hit and ek' retention will shell out something like 8.6 mil for the first two years for that roster spot?

In that instance the pens need more coming back.

With the cap going up the pens can do better than a very late 1st rounder and a 30 year old ham and egger defender IF they are willing to retain 5 mil and take back a 3 mil plus contract.

Ah yes, because replacing Burns with Karlsson worked out so well for the last time who tried it.

And because it worked out so well for the last 2 "contenders" who traded for Karlsson.

Time is a flat circle. Or something like that

Don't see a need for him in Carolina with Gostisbehere signed for years.

Plenty of options to QB their other powerplay too.

Yea, when they were force feeding him to artificially inflate his value, to the detriment of the rest of the team

Naw what really happened is that when Karlsson was on that was the only time San Jose had a chance. You're acting like Karlsson was hurting the team, when he was really leading them to wins and games they had no business being in.

They were a bad team that became historically bad after Karlsson left.

With Morrow showing he should at least be able to handle 3rd pair minutes next year, with Nikishin coming in with very high offensive promise and with Gostisbehere signed for 2 more years, the last thing I’d think the Canes need would be to add an aging Karlsson. If anything, they likely would be in the market for a 2-way RD to play next to Slavin.

I don’t think they really go big game hunting for another D this offseason. Walker has been an excellent fit for RBA’s system and Chatfield has been adequate as a Pesce replacement. To me, it all comes down to what they think of Morrow and his progression in learning how not to be a liability defensively.

They have enough offensive firepower on the blueline next season in Morrow, Nikishin and Gostisbehere. What they may need is a shutdown/2-way RD if Morrow doesn’t improve defensively. What they don’t need is one-dimensional Karlsson with 3 other offensive types already under contract. Personally, I think they finally go out and get their 1A goalie and reel in a big fish or 2 up front in UFA and/or trades.
