Just my pure speculation but I feel like the room might have been a bit of a mess the past couple season after the cup. Between not having landy to val's issues to losing some of the vets like cogs and helm to having to deal with George.

I think a lot of the trades starting with getting the woods in net and ending with this, have not only been about making the team better on ice but fixing the room a bit

Have to think this was done purely as a gift to the team.

And by that, I mean the '22 team that is still here. This was done simply for the good feels between Girard, Cale, Toews, Lehky, Nuke, LOC etc.. but above all else, for Nate, Gabe and EJ. Those initial moments of mayhem on the ice when they won the cup... the tears of joy and pure relief as those three found each other and took a moment to embrace and celebrate.
