Ehlers why Didnt We Trade Him

I have nothing to back this up but I really don't like how Nik left the ice last night.

Looking at the play a few times, it looked like it may have been a groin injury.

That's bad enough for any player, as they can be a real bitch to recover from, a long rest is usually the only thing that really resolves them.

Some can be played through, but they hamper things like speed and agility, edgework which of course is central to Niks game.

Making this worse is that Ehlers has had a severe injury here before, so bad we worried about his ability to fully recover from it.

The way he got up and wasn't favoring one leg over the other leads me to my worry.

I've been very wrong about injuries before and I hope to God I'm wrong this time because this would be the worst way to bid farewell to one of the most beloved 2.0 Jets.

I had the same reaction to the look. That was not an aggravation of a foot injury.

Hope I'm wrong too but looked bad.

Fair enough. I was just pointing out he misses a fair amount of games.
He also puts up less points than Lowry in the playoffs and really needs to show up this post-season.
7 x 8.5m is too much but I would go that high...no higher though.

I would offer him a front loaded 3 x 9.5m. Something like a 4m signing bonus every year and 11m, 11m and 6.5m in the last year of the deal. I doubt he would have any interest in a contract like that.
No way Nik touches a 3 year deal

It'll be 8 years (or maybe 7), likely in the high 8s or low 9s

We'd miss them both a lot in a playoff series, I think.
Yeah i think most of Ehlers strongest supporters could get on board with Samberg being the more valuable player to our team. Doesn't make Ehlers less valuable, just speaks to the top pair calibre shut down D Samberg has become.

Yea, but, in a cap league u often have to make choices between x and y. If you give ehlers 10 mil you have less money for the other guy type thing.
Plenty of room for both at fair contracts if that's an option for us.

If it's not an option for us, it's not an option.

the really curious thing is how constant injuries to ehlers and vilardi affect their negotiations and mindset. does it make them more open to long term, guaranteed money with us as opposed to starting over in a new place for less term and more risk.

Hoping to see Ehlers suit up in the first round.

To me, it looks a bit like a high ankle sprain but that might be way off. Those things tend to linger too and reduce your effectiveness, but some play through them in the playoffs, see: Draisaitl, Leon.

Yeah but if he powers through it and plays injured then we will just hear how he disappears in the playoffs...

Good question. There will be a point of the graph where the lines cross.

What I saw looked like he wouldn't put weight on either foot/leg. Suggests groin to me. But I am probably wrong. Hope so.

Just watched the latest Runway episode on the Jets youtube. Seeing Ehler score the OT winner against Washington and his celebration really made me realize how much I hope he stays. Such a good player and such a solid guy, always had a great vibe. Always been super fun to watch.

Considering the Pionk signing, You I just don’t think the Jets will resign Ehlers. I will not be happy to see him go.

He missed 15 - 20 games on average, and is fragile as glass. When he’s healthy, he’s fun to watch. He is a very very risky signing, considering his physical constitution.

I think the Jets may offer him in the $ 7 mil range, and if he doesn’t accept, they let him go to market.

I’ll be sad to see him go, as he’s fun to watch when healthy.

Looks like their spending on defence, with Pionk etc.

I hope he gets healthy enough to get into PO games ASAP -
We really do need him IMO - he's one of the best at backing off defenders as well as adding pace to that second line and scoring timely goals - and he's been a great addition to the P not just his production but how he gets things moving.
I know he's had problems in the past with PO hockey but I think if the Jets as a team play up to their abilities, that takes a lot of pressure of high skill guys like Ehlers - and he's not the only one. Guys like KC and Schief also benefit a ton when the team is playing well rounded hockey up and down the lineup.
Anyway, I hope he's back soon and I think this is the year he shows his stuff when it counts.
In a nutshell, he's a very important pce of this team - I'm concerned going into the next stretch without him.
This coming from me, might surprise some - I haven't been a huge Ehlers fan in the past - but this year, he's been better at everything IMO.
No comment on this next contract - more concerned about him getting healthy to support what's happening now.
