Ehlers, why didn't we trade him...

Just really hoping he's healthy, Nik hasn't been healthy for a post season in a long time. We need him at 100.

If you look at the other free agent wingers available in the summer, and then factor in the cap increasing by 24 million over the next 3 years, Nik will receive an AAV over $9 million easily. Supply and demand.

Hopefully the Jets are able to sign him because we have no one in house who will replace his production and we have never signed a legit top-6 forward in the 14 year history of the club as a free agent from another team - Perreault was a middle-six forward and Jokinen was a declining player who was mostly awful with the Jets. No reason to believe that would change this off-season.

We really can’t afford to lose Ehlers, as without him, we really have no second line. He’s averaging over a point per game this year, and really is an 80 point player, with # 1 powerplay time. All we’d be left with is Names, and Perfetti, and that’s not near good enough. Ehlers drives that line.

I think the Jets should “pay” Nik, and if that means going $ 9 to $ 9.5 mil per year, you do it. The cap is rising and he’s worth that.

He’s a great team player, never complains, and one of the fastest skaters in the NHL.

This is a hugely important signing, that the Jets should throw money at, to make this signing happen. If we don’t, we’ll see a serious decline in this club.

Not only does Nik make our second an actual second line but I insist that he is the improvement in our PP this year. We have fantastic talent on the PP, but while everyone passes the puck around for two minutes looking for the pretty play, Nik will shoot from anywhere, either causing chaos with a rebound or skating all over the place pulling defenders out of position.

But he has #1pp time this year so let’s see if he hits 80 then. Also, he gets credit for driving the pp, yet when it went ice cold he didn't get the blame.

I agree - it's about all of them and what they bring when the chips are down.
Lot's of really good discussion lately on deadline deals, what we need, tweaks here and there to shore up the lines or blueline.

But IMO, it's more about the current team and what they can do when the game gets faster, more physical, and with a lot less space.
If we can apply our game / systems when the game is faster, more physical and where the opposition will be giving you nothing, we should be fine.
That's the challenge - more so (IMO) than whether or not our 2C will hold up or if Stan can hang in against the best

What we saw last night - though the penalties made it hard to judge anything. But were the penalties a result of that faster, more physical opponent?

He is going at a 80 point pace through 3/4 of the season. He could be at a 90 point pace if he was played as a top line guy, but we all understand that part I think.

If he was always healthy and played top line like Connor he would be valued around the same. Because of injury history, playoff struggles and usage, we may be able to get a $10M calibre player locked up for $7.5M or so

How he does in the playoffs will have an impact on his AAV for sure. His playoff pts/game being almost half (0.78 vs 0.46) his regular season for sure is not a good look. But if he stays healthy and actually produces this year... we will see

Someone said "our own rental" pretty much explains it whether he re-signs or not. We need him and everybody in the playoffs, because it will be tough sledding with Dallas and Colorado beefing up and as much as I would like to , you can't rule out McD and the Oil either. I love the moves we made, playoff type players in Tanev and Schenn ,can't have enough of those players in the playoffs , the trick is to make the playoffs and that is when you need the offensive players in regular season, just to get there and we have that sewed up this year. Like Marner is great in regular season but much less in playoffs. I really think Chevy is one of the best GM's in the league and I thought he would flop when the Jets hired him there. I think we improved for the playoffs but didn't tinker enough to screw up the chemistry. And maybe Schenn can teach Stanley a thing or two to become a better big dman.

If Stanley has not learned how to be a better dman by now, it’s never happening.

Why though? Schenn did exactly that, and did it older than Stanley is now.
Did Schenn really change his stripes? He's always been a hard-hitting, stay at home defenseman who the scouts hoped would develop some offense. He's always been a tough, defense-first guy.

OTOH, Stanley's rarely been very physical, is definitely not known for his stalwart defense.

And I'm not sure if Stanley's going to get another 100 games to figure it out - at least not with the Jets.

There's actually a lot of stuff on line about how he's changed his game after he nearly was forced out of the league

Well, even he says it wasn't reinvention as much as adapting to the way the league is today. And he credits Adam Oates! Maybe Oates stole Schefiele's defense and gave it to Schenn?

I don’t believe that Schenn was ever at Stanley’s level of incompetence. You can’t count on him for offense. You can’t count on him for defense. He’s good for a lot of dumb penalties. So he has that going for him.

Full disclosure, I'm not his biggest fan but think the Jets are better with him in the lineup. Having said that, am I the only one concerned that we are letting Ehlers walk for nothing... Ask the Islanders how that feels.

I hope this plays out well...
Walking for nothing sucks, BUT ... are the Jets better off with the sorts of futures they'd get for Ehlers as a rental, or with him in the lineup as an "own rental"? Sure, maybe they could have flipped whatever they got for him for someone better (by adding), but that's no guarantee and for all we know Chevy attempted to negotiate some three-team trade and it never panned out.

It seems to me that this is one of those years to go "all in". If Ehlers wasn't on the team and we had the ability to trade away picks/prospects to rent him for a playoff run, people would probably be in favour. So I'm okay with them not trading him.

I think at this point Chevy has proven he makes good trades when available. So I'm going to give him the benefit of a doubt that there was nothing out there that made us better than with Ehlers as an own rental.
