Full disclosure, I'm not his biggest fan but think the Jets are better with him in the lineup. Having said that, am I the only one concerned that we are letting Ehlers walk for nothing... Ask the Islanders how that feels.

I hope this plays out well...

because were trying to win the stanley cup... I don't know why people expected him to be traded when it was very very very clear he wasn't going to be

Sometimes you're just going to lose good players to free agency. The Jets have been lucky that they had some non-playoff years coincide with the expiry of a couple of contracts (Ladd in 2016, Copp in 2022) and made some good hay by selling at the deadline. But if the Jets had been contenders those years (much less 1st in the league juggernauts) they would've self-rentaled those guys too.

If the organization would of tried to sign him to an extension this past off season and he rebuffed them and his agent would of told Chevy they were walking to free agency then that would of been the time to move him if the Jets were so inclined. Now especially with the way both he and the Jets are playing you ride or die with him and let the chips fall where they may in the off season.

I would have been ok with moving him last offseason, but he immediately became such a huge part of our PP; (who would have guessed🤫); he became almost impossible to move. A good playoff and the Jets will offer him top dollar. Maybe he will take it.

My position at the beginning of the season was that if Ehlers not re-signed by the deadline, he should be traded unless both these things are true:

  • The Jets win-loss records is that of a legit contender i.e a top 5-8 team in the NHL. Not just a playoff team
  • Jets underlying metrics are similar to that of a true contender
Both those things are true. So I am okay with them holding on the Nik. Hopefully they either win the the cup and/or re-sign him without him hitting free agency.

Its called "your own rental". Even if he walks in the off season, it's a lot easier to keep the player for a playoff run than to try and trade him for someone as good (and likely no term either). Otherwise you are trading him for picks and/or prospects or lesser players which actually hurts the team now.

at the beginning of the year I was a big proponent of trading him.
But with the jets where they currently are. I changed my tune.

I do however, feel he is good as gone come July.

Why would that be a distraction in the room? It would be celebrated.
Because if it turns out that he tells the org he wants to hit free agency it might make things in the room a little awkward…

Or if he signs a big extension, it might signal to guys like Pionk and Iafallo that there won’t be enough cap space for their deals.

At this point they are best leaving it to the offseason.

and alternatively, years they made the POs, they kept guys like Myers, Dillon, Tanev, Frolik, and Chiarot who ended up signing deals elsewhere (a few pretty big ones too) and walked for nothing.

i found the comments and theories of ehlers being traded on here pretty far-fetched. the mastermind posters thinking a trade-and-flip the return were way off base in their predictions once again. the Jets hardly trade out of UFAs months early (as evidenced by the list above), not sure why it was some season-long discussion with ehlers.

I’ll be ( very pleasantly) surprised if Nik re-signs but if can carry his ace play this season into the POs then he’s easily one of the top rentals this TDL, and the best possible fit for these Jets.

He’s been a great soldier for his entire time here and deserves a heck of a sendoff if he goes. If he stays, maybe the Jets’ window stays open a little longer.

Either way, they couldn’t afford not to keep him. This is one self-rental thats easy to forgive.

I think the NHL should bring in a new rule like the NFL.
If you lose a player(s) to FA you receive a compensatory pick(s) ... depending on how much that player signs for. The more money the higher the pick.
Seriously I hate the TDL ... it hurts the small market teams.
This season the Jets were the best team and now at TDL they get screwed. The teams behind improved because of NMC, taxes or warmer weather whatever the reason but imo thats BS.
You have non playoff teams taking on players salary of a contending team is BS.
The whole purpose of the salary cap is to keep an even playing field and then at TDL that gets thrown out the window?
If a team is taking on other teams salary isn't that like cheating ... you are completing against 2 teams combined.
Maybe the Jets and Flames should make a deal ... 5 years Jets are a top contender and the Flames are bottom feeders and then the next 5 years the Flames are a top contender for 5 years.and the Jets are bottom feeders.

Nik has a lot to prove in the playoffs, but so do like 18 other Jets
I agree - it's about all of them and what they bring when the chips are down.
Lot's of really good discussion lately on deadline deals, what we need, tweaks here and there to shore up the lines or blueline.

But IMO, it's more about the current team and what they can do when the game gets faster, more physical, and with a lot less space.
If we can apply our game / systems when the game is faster, more physical and where the opposition will be giving you nothing, we should be fine.
That's the challenge - more so (IMO) than whether or not our 2C will hold up or if Stan can hang in against the best
