Ehlers, why didn't we trade him...

because were trying to win the stanley cup... I don't know why people expected him to be traded when it was very very very clear he wasn't going to be

We weren’t going to get back a player of his quality, so at worst, he would be a good rental we acquired for free.
Sometimes you're just going to lose good players to free agency. The Jets have been lucky that they had some non-playoff years coincide with the expiry of a couple of contracts (Ladd in 2016, Copp in 2022) and made some good hay by selling at the deadline. But if the Jets had been contenders those years (much less 1st in the league juggernauts) they would've self-rentaled those guys too.

If the organization would of tried to sign him to an extension this past off season and he rebuffed them and his agent would of told Chevy they were walking to free agency then that would of been the time to move him if the Jets were so inclined. Now especially with the way both he and the Jets are playing you ride or die with him and let the chips fall where they may in the off season.
I doubt you are the only one. I was certainly hoping for some resolution on Ehlers by now, but prefer him still on the team in a serious cup run and then let the chips fall where they may.
I would have been ok with moving him last offseason, but he immediately became such a huge part of our PP; (who would have guessed

We should never ever even think of getting rid of Ehlers he is one of our best.

My position at the beginning of the season was that if Ehlers not re-signed by the deadline, he should be traded unless both these things are true:
- The Jets win-loss records is that of a legit contender i.e a top 5-8 team in the NHL. Not just a playoff team
- Jets underlying metrics are similar to that of a true contender
Its called "your own rental". Even if he walks in the off season, it's a lot easier to keep the player for a playoff run than to try and trade him for someone as good (and likely no term either). Otherwise you are trading him for picks and/or prospects or lesser players which actually hurts the team now.

My hunch is that they don’t even discuss the extension until after the parade.
If they do sign a new deal they don’t want it to be a distraction in the room.

Because if it turns out that he tells the org he wants to hit free agency it might make things in the room a little awkward…
Or if he signs a big extension, it might signal to guys like Pionk and Iafallo that there won’t be enough cap space for their deals.
At this point they are best leaving it to the offseason.
