I think it is more of a muscle memory thing. Some players when they get someone's stick somewhere they are programmed to react that way to get the call. I sound crazy saying this but it's a thing I swear

This is why I hate DD. Instead of racing to the boards to either pokecheck the puck, hit the Oiler going for it, or sticking to the boards to block the puck, he decided to slowly drift towards the puck, doing none of the above. Maybe a semi-pokecheck at most. No compete level whatsoever.

As strong as these guys are, I'm pretty sure the refs aren't used to seeing one handed backhand swipes of blade to shin pad knocking many guys over at this level... but McDavid... and Weber I guess.
