Confirmed with Link: [EDM/VAN] Oilers acquire Vasily Podkolzin for OTT 4th '25

I still see the Val Nichuskin comparisons in this player. Just taking a while to get there. I love that we keep rewarding him with top 6 time because he;s getting the small details right. In the coming years, the offense should come along. Would honestly love to lock him up cheap this summer for a few years before he finds his stride.
I think I see a player closer to Ethan Moreau here, maybe the offense won't come along as far as we would want, but an excellent defensive player who's hard to play against.

If Podkolzin becomes sort of modern Ethan Moreau, the Oilers won that trade by miles and miles.

I think that Pod brings enough good things elsewhere that make up for his lack of finish/production even on a second line. However the winger on the other side needs to compliment that and be a plus finisher. Arvidsson is similarly struggling to produce which means the whole line as a whole suffers.

I keep hoping that the last switch will flip for Podkolzin offensively but even if it happens I’m not sure it’s this year. The rest of his game is excellent. Great forechecker and along the boards. Has made a number of great defensive plays in recent games that have saved goals.

Having Perry and Hyman here who are 2 of the better netfront guys around hopefully rub off on him. For a big guy who gets position he doesn’t seem to get his stick on many point shots or get to rebounds. That’s a skill he needs to develop.
I agree. Pods is a great third wheel, but the second line requires another skilled player to complement Draisaitl. As someone else mentioned, Kane would be a great complement if/when he recovers. For now, I'd like to see RNH tried on that line, but Knob seems obsessed with the RNH-McDavid duo.

One of the more effective games from Podz last night. He seems to have a really great sense of where the offensive play is developing. Nearly instantaneous decisions to pass it to the point for a shot on net. Being an option for Leon’s passes on the rush. Getting open at net front.

You add that to his always good defensive play. And we might have more than just a player here, we might have a star.

Stumbled on a great article on Podz: Breakout Alert: Vasily Podkolzin

He's playing well everywhere on the ice.

Excellent write-up (aside from the nit-picked shade thrown on Emberson, who has been great since getting comfortable with the team), thanks for sharing

Podz is a beast, hungry in puck pursuit. Like the author said, he's like a Hyman out there for work-rate (perhaps more so, but less skilled). There's a reason Leon wants him on his wing.

This is turning into a fleecing. He's playing like a guy that should have returned a 2nd.

You should read what the Canucks fans are saying about him:

"So what? He's exactly the same player as we had here. Nothing new"

"He's a product of Draisaitl, but he's not scoring like Hyman. Bust"

"He wasn't going to amount to anything here. So glad we got a 4th for him"

I googled and couldn't find the article and don't see it linked here. Curious to read it.

Is it the older Canucks Banter article from 2022 you're referring to?

In terms of production breakout the article is wrong. Not just about Podkolzin. If you were buying this stock in fantasy drafts several of their top ten didn't work out. Wahlstrom, Kaliyev. lol

Moreau was a great player, strong defensively, killed penalties, physical. Podkolzin is not there yet, but that would be a good outcome.

So does he need to drop the gloves a bit more often in order for fans to stop clammering about more toughness in our lineup?

How did we got this guy just for a fourth rounder.

Vancouver's management team is more incompetent than Kevin Lowe was
They were going to waive him and lose him for nothing. They didn't even play him in the playoffs

I'd compare it to how we got Savoie. Buffalo had too much of that kind of prospect so they needed to trade him.

I still think that he'd be best suited for a 3rd line role. That said he has been solid for us.
He's definitely jumped on the opportunity left by Jeff Skinner not panning out as well. I see some extra value in him playing a lot in the top six, just to develop him a bit more. We need some youth there. Maybe he goes to the bottom six for the playoffs if the team goes for another forward

I guess, overall he just needs to be more productive. That or we need an upgrade on Arvidsson.
