We've seen Carolina make major moves to improve. Can Edmonton tweak the line up and get them once again to Stanley Cup glory?

Oilers 2nd round pick 2025

I don't think Utah is going to make it to the playoffs this year. They're 11 points behind the 4th place Avalanche. With no extension in place for Vejmelka perhaps this is enough for the Oilers to upgrade in net for an extended post season run. Ingram can take over as the starter for the remainder of the season for Utah,

Columbus is right in the thick of it this year. However, I don't see an extended playoff run in the cards for them with the Devils, Carolina and Washington ahead of them. Perhaps a bit of an overpayment for Olivier would make this trade happen. Columbus could go after big fish at the TDL if they wanted to; they certainly have enough cap space. Extra draft capital would make this easier.

Oilers get a tough as nails bottom sixer who can fight, PK and wears a letter. Exactly the rental they need in the playoffs.

Arizona fan here. Agree with your take that Utah isn't making playoffs this year, but we're at the point where we're ideally looking for prospects rather than picks. I feel like a mid to late 2nd is about fair value but ideally it'd be someone who's closer to the show (not familiar enough with your prospects to discuss further). But, my guess is probably Utah does this, wouldn't be surprised if we let him walk after the season depending what mgmt thinks of Ingram and how far away Hrabal is after his good WJC.

That said, I may be in the minority but I don't think Skinner is the problem for you guys, imo he was mostly fine in last year's playoffs and he's already familiar with the system you guys play. Veggie's probably a slight upgrade but the second either one of them has a single bad game you have a full-on goalie controversy, not sure that distraction is worth it. Not my decision though and it's your team besides.

Either way I think Utah maybe does this, depending on whether they're planning on re-signing Veggie. If Utah mgmt made this deal, I wouldn't be offended

Columbus should only move Olivier if they are going to miss the playoffs completely and Olivier has agreed to a handshake deal to return as a UFA in the summer. Otherwise they should just keep pushing forward, they aren't going to count themselves out

I think anyone would agree Vejmelka is an upgrade on Pickard. A tandem of Skinner/Vejmelka is better than than a Skinner/Pickard tandem.

Adding Olivier to the bottom six is a win. Are you worried about 2nd round picks?

Screw the picks. The Oilers should win it all THIS year.

I don't see that at all. Will Vejmelka get more than a 2nd and a serviceable backup at the TDL? I mean.. maybe? Doubtful though.

Do you think the Olivier trade is unfair? I don't know bottom sixers pending UFAs go for more than that. Great player for the role, don't get me wrong. But let's not overstate this.

I like him a lot, probably for the same reasons they do. What do you think is fair value for Olivier as a pending UFA? The premise is that Columbus won't make much of a splash in the post season and Olivier doesn't have an extension, the latter is true and the former is likely.
 
Only way I trade Olivier is if a contract can't get signed and someone comes in with a Jeannot overpay, otherwise I keep him for a playoff run and let him walk.

As far as what he gets as UFA, Trenin got like 3.5 for four years, he gets at least that.

Columbus has to go through Washington, Carolina and New Jersey.

Their record vs. these teams over the past season and a half (regular season) 2024-2025

vs. Washington Capitals 0 wins 5 losses
vs. Carolina 3 wins 4 losses
vs. New Jersey 2 wins 5 losses

I can't see it happening for them this year. Hope springs eternal and all that, I know.

I can't argue with CBJ recent success against their likely playoff opponents but that said, these professional athletes aren't going to share your pessimism and Waddell has been around long enough to know he'll lose the locker room moving a guy like Olivier for a pick while the team is playing well

Oliver is definitely worth around a 2nd around the leauge. But Jackets probably value him more than that. Not sure if he's good enough to hang with McDavid and Drai tho

I would probably insist on higher than Jeannot, seeing as though Olivier is a better player.

I can't see either of Utah or Columbus doing this.

If I'm running Utah, I keep Vejmelka and try to peddle Ingram somewhere else. He hasn't been good at all this year.

Olivier is one of Columbus' heartbeats. He's that coveted enforcer that can also play hockey. They've got as good a shot at the playoffs as any of the bubble teams out east, can't see them moving him.

I tend to agree to a point, but both are pending UFAs. Neither has been extended by their respective teams. Utah isn't likely to make the playoffs.

Why lose Vejmelka for nothing? Or hell, trade him and sign him in the off season. Get a 2nd for basically nothing.

100% Olivier is a heart and soul kind of guy. That is why I want him on the Oilers. As I stated above I think Columbus has a good shot at making the playoffs but I don't see them getting out of the 1st round.

Wouldn't it be worth trading Olivier for a 2nd, bowing out in the 1st round anyway and re-signing him in the off season? I dunno. Seems like smart asset management to me.

I view both of these players as rentals for Edmonton.

Ingram has an extra year, he's not a UFA.

There's nuance to Vejmelka. Utah is a team on the rise and they'd be firmly in the playoff picture if they hadn't had the terrible luck with injuries that they've had, including two top four D, which would cripple most teams. Especially with Vancouver's downfall.

They have lots of time to sign Vejmelka if they want to keep him. A second isn't enough to make them rush that decision, in my estimation.

I think Columbus would view having Olivier around for the playoffs as more valuable than a pick. He wears a letter there. They have quite a few picks over the next couple years.
