Fairly straight forward trade.

Yakupov at 2mil to TB
Filppula to Edmonton

TB gets three mil in cap space to sign Kucherov, plus a lottery ticket.
Edmonton gets a spare top 9 centre, which would allow them to move Draisaitl to RNH wing, and balance the top 9. (not to mention a mentor/translator for Puljujarvi)

Most TB fans seem to see Filppula as the fall guy for their cap issues. Although Filppula waiving for Edmonton is a question, the Oilers have managed to convince several high profile/sought-after UFAs to sign there, so that may not be as big a sell job as it was. New arena, McJesus, ect...

The other end of the NMC is for the Oilers, and how it could effect them at the expansion draft. Right now they still haven't managed to get another key piece for their defence. Although that's a bigger fish to fry vs. #3C, I can't see it being solved anytime soon, as what the team needs isn't for sale around the league. Thus there's only a need to protect 3 blue-liners, leaving them free to take the 7-3-1 option for the draft, so Flippula's NMC clause shouldn't cause an issue.

Except it's not a question, he wouldn't even slightly consider it. I'd personally pick Tampa as the cup favourite, but even if you're not a believer, the worst you could put them is still top 5 contender. Then you look at the difference in weather. Then you consider he chose Tampa as a UFA (when he could potentially choose between 30 teams), and now you've narrowed that down to Tampa vs Edmonton? Zero consideration.

I doubt Fil waives his NMC. With Yak their RW would be Kucherov,Drouin/Stamkos,Yakupov,Callahan,Brown,Condra. I doubt Yak is needed.

As the OP explains, the Lightning gain cap space to sign Kucherov.

I think Filppula would waive. Watched him almost his entire career.

Stand up guy, smart enough to see the writing on the wall.

I would do it. Gives TBL the space they need for Kucherov, they'll probably be able to get more out of Yak than we can. TBL are one of the teams I think is a good fit for Yak.

As others have noted, who knows if he'll waive.

Not an oiler fan but i dont see why they do this. Give up yak, take on extra salary and get a spare part. Tampa would have to sweeten the pot or no point for the oilers

Would think Edmonton would want to send more money back or at least a contract that goes into next season, maybe Letestu? Would like to try to do a bigger deal for the Lightning as well to shed another high cap player.

Filpulla + Garrison for Yakupov + Letestu + Fayne + Bear?

I would do this. Also think Filppula is a fantastic fit for Edmonton. His cap hit is high but he is still a good player. He is a two way center and has a lot of experience on winning teams. He could really be a leader for that team and show a lot of those young guys how to win and prepare. Plus his contract is up in a couple of years. Yakupov would be a guy we wouldn't have to lean on much but I think with all the talent around he could be a guy who can play on almost any line and give other guys a break. I think it's a very underrated trade. Only question is would Filppula waive. I think he would when it came down to it.

Tampa does lack a little depth on RW which has forced Drouin to play offwing. They would probably like to put him at LW. Stamkos will be at center. Callahan we be on LTIR and Brown and Condra are not top six guys. But still I don’t know where Yak fits because Cooper demands his forwards be responsible defensively as proven by the fact that he had both Kucherov and Drouin in the press box at first. No way Cooper puts Yak on a checking line. As of right now Yak would have to beat out rookie Brayden Point. Maybe being on Namestnikov’s wing and having 4 other Russian teammates would bring a rebirth.

Even if Yak couldn’t make Tampa’s lineup I would still do this deal simply for the cap space.

The biggest reason for Edmonton to do this is that in Filppula’s entire 10 year career, he has made the playoffs every single year. He could be the magic charm that breaks the curse.

Yeah, this is a gong show lopsided trade that the Lightning do and even add picks if needed and the Oilers hang up.

Its moot regardless as Flip never waives to go to Edmonton.

The Oilers would go 4/4 at the expansion draft.

Lucic/Eberle/RNH/Draisaitl
Sekera/Larsson/Klefbom/Davidson or Reinhart depending on this year

Filppula is what he is on the ice, but that NMC makes him worth less than dirt to a team trying to protect their players from Las Vagas.

You really think we'd leave Davidson exposed for this garbage?

Cap space might be the biggest motivation, but Yakupov will be surrounded by winning. If anyone can help him develop, it's Tampa.

Also, its not like the kid doesn't have talent.

How is it lopsided for the Lightning? It's only lopsided financially next season, this season on the ice it heavily favors Edmonton. Tampa trades a very useful player for them for someone they don't need who might not be in the lineup every night. Tampa would not add picks to Filppula to trade him for a player they don't need, if they added picks to Filppula it would be for a player that could replace Filppula but cheaper.

Even if it's not Filpulla, Tampa is a great fit for Yakupov. I've always thought that.

It doesn't appear he's getting a sniff with McDavid, and Yak isn't useful in a 3rd line role. We have far better options on our team right now.

While Yakupov is looking like he's on the way out, it's not because we wish ill on him or don't like him as a person. He's a great kid and easy to cheer for, it's strictly about us trying to ice the best team that fits our identity and direction we are heading in. Purely a hockey move.

Who knows, maybe he starts the year in the press box? Pakarinen and Hendricks just suffered injuries, this might be enough to keep him as the 13th forward. We'll see how the rest of camp plays out.

Taking the Filppula contract off of their hands is a massive benefit to them. Giving them a free shot at a high profile reclamation project (and an RFA) while doing so just sweetens the pot for them. It's very lopsided.

Flip can consistently play hockey...yakupov as of now cant. As op mentioned it also allows for drai to move to wing enhancing your depth two fold...

if filpulla needs to be protected in expansion draft it kills this deal

otherwise the deal might make some sense

maybe expand the deal and include brandon colburn while sending griffen reinhart and mark fayne back

tampa doesnt need the kids but if they do turn things around its a steal

edmonton gets alot better alot quicker but its tough bringing a nmc to the team

Agree it's not lopsided at all. In fact helps Edmonton get closer to a winning team in my opinion. They lack veteran leaders who have won. Here you have one available who can slot right in at 3rd Center and do that very well. Can match up against other teams best players and do a good job at that. Can also be a mentor to young players on that team. If I was Edmonton I would do it.

Yeah. This kills the deal for me. We'd lose a good player to Vegas having to protect Flippula.

Hmm surprised both sides are saying the values leaning TB's way, perhaps add a pick there going back. That, or to balance off the extra year, you could have both sides retain ~a million. So Yak at 50% (1.25) for Fippula at 4mil. That way TB get the cap space(2.75 more) they need for this year, but Edmonton gets Filppula for a more manageable 4 mil next year.

Also Oilers fans, am I the only one who would sooner risk giving up Davidson vs. Maroon, especially to a team that's going to be a division rival? I like the kid, but he's replaceable from within the system, Maroon (especially with the cap flexibility he gives) is not. There's very few situations that would make me willing to go the protect 8 skaters route.

Plus the 5 Million doesn't really create any issues for Edmonton, as there's no major signings upcoming outside of Draisaitl.

Lucic-McDavid-Eberle
Maroon-RNH-Draisaitl
Pouliot-Filppula-Versteeg/Puljujarvi

Would be in the conversation for the best top 9 in the league, and it could all be protected. That's worth giving up Yak for me. And I can live with a defence of...

Klefbom-Larsson
Sekera-Fayne
Davidson-Nurse

... until next offseason. Fayne's the one that could use an upgrade, but a cheap, short term option can be found during the season.

'Flip' would also cost us a valuable player from our defense at the expansion draft. And considering we're trying to fix that, adding another center doesn't seem too high on the to do list.
