Marcus Pettersson (D) $4.025 M AAV Pending UFA
Oilers 2nd 2025 or 2026, dealers choice
Oilers make a separate trade to open up cap space if they need it.
I doubt you find many Oilers being okay with letting Akey go. 2nd and a sweetener. Akey is definitely not a sweetener.I feel like this has been discussed a lot in other threads. The price is St. Louis’ 2025 2nd (from the Broberg offersheet) and Akey for Pettersson, and most Oilers fans from what I’ve seen are pretty fine with paying that.

Akey is worth more than a 2nd on his own at least to the Oilers. Grusknikov is not on that level. He's more of Max Wanner.A 2nd and a sweetener doesn't pull off Pettersson.
Tanev was traded last year as a rental for Grushnikov and a 2nd. The equivalent of that from Edmonton is Akey and a 2nd, and I'd likely argue that Pettersson has more value right now due to the much worse D rental class this year.

6 points in 64 AHL games is very good? That's just false. At the time of the deal last year, people were talking about Grushnikov as if he was a very good prospect going back to the Flames for Tanev. He was also a 2nd rounder himself.
The Oilers prospect pool is pretty ass outside of Savoie, O'Reilly, Akey and Jarventie, and Savoie and O'Reilly wouldn't be included. That leaves either Akey or Jarventie as pretty much the only pieces in addition to the 2nd that can get a deal done.
Akey is a lot shinier prospect than Grushnikov. Akey is only 19 and has had impressive camps with Oilers. Grushnikov is in his 3rd AHL season and is almost 22.That's just false. There is a split around what Marcus Pettersson's current trade value is on these boards. A number of Penguin fans seem okay with a 2nd. A few Oiler fans seem okay with it. I think it's a fair offer.
There isn't any cap dumps going back, no divisional rivalries to worry about... this seems like a trade waiting to happen.
Factor in supply/demand and Pettersson should fetch a bit more than 2nd. This is the first time I'm seeing Marcus Pettersson going for 2 x 2nds. I usually see a 2nd. I guess I'll take your words for it.So you don't know a thing about the prospect, yet you're claiming that he's equal to a 7th rounder from your team?
Again, every single Pettersson caliber rental defenseman goes for 2 2nds or a 2nd and a B prospect caliber return. If you're not willing to do that, you're going to get outbid.
No they are not. Penguins fans have been extremely consistent with their asks for Pettersson, and the asks are based on the market value for similar defensemen.
There are more Penguins fans who want a 1st for Pettersson than there are fans who would settle for a 2nd for him.

Petry went for a 2nd and 5th. 5th would be the sweetenerWhen was the last time a defenseman of Pettersson's caliber went only for a 2nd? Especially taking into account the weak rental D market.
Petry went for a 2nd and 5th. 5th would be the sweetener
Pretty much this.Jeff Petry had 15 points in 59 games while being a -25 when Edmonton traded him.
A 2nd rounder and a sweetener gets you Brett Kulak, not Marcus Pettersson. Which is what Edmonton did in 2022 when they traded Lagesson and a 2nd for Kulak.
Tanev last year (Grushnikov and a 2nd), Giordano in 2022 (2 2nds) and Martinez in 2020 (2 2nds) all set a pretty clear price for what Pettersson goes for. It's 2 2nds or a 2nd and a 2nd round caliber prospect. If the Oilers don't want to move Akey, their best bet is probably just offering both the 2025 and 2026 2nds for Pettersson.

I think the mere idea that Oilers would rather sign Klingberg and roll with him over obtaining Marcus Pettersson is one of those red flags that become stupid obvious after being eliminated again.I feel like other teams will be way more desperate for Pettersson and will pay more than Edmonton would.
I also feel like we really want a RD. In true Oiler form they'll wait until the last possible second to do anything. Klingberg will get significant rope first.
I mean, we already have signed Klingberg. He's here, practicing, and is slated to play Saturday. It makes sense to see if he can keep up before overpaying for a LD when it's a RD we need anyway. Ekholm-Nurse-Kulak is a championship caliber left side already.I think the mere idea that Oilers would rather sign Klingberg and role with him over obtaining Marcus Pettersson is one of those red flags that become stupid obvious after being eliminated again.
