I enjoy watching other fanbases (mostly flames) argue that our defense and goaltending suck, yet we give up the 8th fewest ga/g.

So if that was true, we wouldnt be anywhere close to top 10.
Its the inevitable contradiction in the way most on the mains view the Oilers. Basically it comes down to everyone other than McDavid succeeds only because of McDavid. But McDavid is not worthy of praise because he cannot raise other players games enough to win a cup like say a Claude Lemieux I guess.

I wonder if when all is said and done, Draisaitl will surpass Messier as the 3rd best Oiler of all time. Might need a few dominant playoff runs/Cups and maybe another Hart or Conn Smythe trophy etc, but it's completely doable for a player of this caliber and he looks like he wants EVERYTHING this year.
Maybe it’s the difference in generations and how I remember (or don’t remember) the 2 eras, but it feels like Draisaitl contributes in such a more subtle, discreet manner.

He truly is one of the all time best. Aren’t we blessed to see it?!

Watch him get dicked when it's awards/recognition time.

Because the league just loves a good narrative over recognizing legit performance

The good news is the voters gave MacKinnon a Hart last year. The narrative was that he was "due" for one and they were clearly just waiting for a year where McDavid didn't go off to make it happen. I don't think what any other player did last year mattered to the voters at all. Now that they got that out of the way they won't feel obligated to give him the Hart this year.

If this performance were coming from Matthews we would see national headlines of "Matthews should win the Rocket, Hart, Lindsay, Selke, AND Richard to be the first player to do this ever!!!!!"

The drum beat would be deafening, and this result would effectively be group think massaged into place. Leon? In March someone might say "hey look, he's actually having a good season. Probably all because of McDavid though."

It's always 'because of McDavid'...clearly showing how incompetent all these experts are. None of them watch the games.

I'm patiently waiting for the random, obscure stat to emerge that becomes the "well BUT" to attempt to asterisk Leon's aware eligibility.

"Ok that's all fine and dandy, but can you really give the Hart to a guy that plays on a team that scores a lot of goals!?"

There's always some goalpost move whenever an Oiler is up for it.

Well we certainly don't score a lot of goals this season. We also certainly don't score a lot of empty net goals. That's where MacKinnon and Kucherov get a large chunk of their production every year. MacKinnon is already at 8 empty net points this year and we aren't even halfway through the year. Kucherov broke the all time record with 14 empty net points last season.

Well, we are only 30+ games into the season. Obviously if he gets the most points and goals it’s impossible to lose those awards. lol. Maybe he loses the Hart but time will also tell.

Always the goalposts with the NHL media in this country. Got their Leafs jammies on well before the Oil even play. If this was Matthews doing this their hands would be covered in blisters.

Not to mention Drai is doing this with a guy traded for a 4th and another guy who was a waiver wire pickup. Sucks he's not getting the attention he deserves but us Oiler fans are appreciative and know that we are so lucky to have this guy. And for 8 more years!

Leon's fancies this year.

Also further to his 900pts, he's 23 behind Kucherov and 52 MacKinnon, they both have 1 year on Leon.

bUt he'S a PrOduCT oF McDAvID aND A Pp MErCHaNT!!!!
Unf***ingbelievable morons still say that nonsense about him especially this season.

Everybody on this team is a merchant of McDavid. If it isn't Draisaitl, its Hyman. If not Hyman, its Bouchard. Bunch of moronic lazy ass f***ing takes

He’s not allowed to go elbow everyone in the head like messier did.

For those older than me, was this phenomenon the same with Messier et al in the 80's, or was there enough general maturity among fans and media at that point to recognize that the other superstars were also good entirely on their own?

Idk about the Messier time either since I wasn't born for those glory years. But its hilarious how Draisaitl gets lack of recognition because hur durrr mcdavid. Meanwhile guys like MacKinnon play with the likes of Rantanen and Makar, but they say f*** all with that merchant nonsense.

I also love how Ovechkin is lionized for his "spot" on the power play, but for Draisaitl he's a "merchant" and scoring goals that just anyone could.

Kucherov was the real MVP last year.

Leon's fancies this year.

Also further to his 900pts, he's 23 behind Kucherov and 52 MacKinnon, they both have 1 year on Leon.

They also have generational PMD playing alongside them.

One of the most astonishing things is Drai is on pace to eclipse every one of his career pts stats and goals. 60G 130pts, in that ballpark, and all the while being managed at 21mins/game this season. This is not Tippettt or Woody loading up McDrai for 25mins/game. We're getting 21mins and change from each this season, but its shown dividends in allowing Leon particularly to play each shift with more dominating pace and work rate. KK is masterclassing this. This also could result in McD and Drai having more for playoffs.

This is what we were always wanting, a coach to manage McD and Drai minutes responsibly, and we're getting that, and winning.
