Sometimes he looks like a 2nd pairing guy, sometimes he should be healthy scratched. If you get a string of his good games you'll be very happy, he's fine as a bottom pairing guy for a playoff team.

Good pickup for the Oilers. Good in transition and defensively in a bottom-pairing role. Can play with a offensive oriented mobile top 4 partner well too if needed.
in the same way anti-habs fans pushback against the hype from Mtl's huge fanbase on here, i will say this is a good pickup. local kid, underrated dman, who will help the oilers a lot. and i watch a lot of oiler games

He's the kind of player that people that exclusively read box scores or watch highlights dislike, but he helps tilt the ice the right way and generally makes the right play. Its a good pickup. Chiarot has rarer tools and does more in the playoffs, but I think Kulak is the better overall player.

He averages less than half a minute a game in penalty time. That's negligible for a defender.

My guy, there will always be negative responses. He can think what we wants! Doesn’t mean that Kulak isn’t a good positional player.
Some people only think star players have value
If he is put with an offensive Dman, he is way better than a physical shutdown D. He was arguably the best pairing when he played with Petry before Edmunson joined.

Note to Oilers fans on what to expect of Kulak, from a Habs fan.
This guy will have stretches of 5 to 10 games that leave you thinking he's a bona-fide puck-moving #4/#5D who can play in all situations, followed by a stretch of 5 to 10 games where he plays like he doesn't even belong in this league. His biggest strength is his mobility, he can move the puck just fine, but his d-zone coverage can be atrocious at times. He's prone to making Pee Wee level brain cramps. His physicality is underwhelming and he's not the kind of D who looks particularly sharp in playoffs-hockey.
If you paid a 3rd or under I think it's a decent addition. If you paid a 2nd you definitely overpaid.
