1.000 for the rest of the season carries a cap hit of ~2.200 doesn't it?

The regular season is October 12 to April 29, which is 200 days.
Lets say he signs for 1.000 on January 29th, that's 91 days.

1.000 / 91 * 200 = 2.198
They have the cap space now for 2.2m because Mike Smith is on the IR but I don’t quite get where the space comes from if Smith comes back in Feb.

You know you're desperate when not only do you feel like you need to sign this walking talking douche bag drama machine, but you can't even get him @ minimum despite him needing the money and nobody else having interest.

Maybe he can learn to play D.

In all fairness, he is a solid player. He will make them better.

I don’t really get Edmonton for Kane.

It’s half a season so very limited time to raise his value.
There’s a good chamce Edmonton misses playoffs and the best place to raise value is the playoffs

Smart move for all sides. Would love Kane (the player, not sure on the personality) in NJ. He's gonna put up monster numbers.

Between McDavid constantly giving side eye and being passive aggressive and Kane's constant actual aggression this should make for a real fun atmosphere for all the struggling kids on that team...good luck with this one.

Are there even that many "kids" on the Oilers roster? I count like four ... Bouchard, Yamamoto, Puljujarvi ... I guess (5th season), and uh McLeod? 3/4 are having good seasons.

I wouldn't want Kane in my team's dressing room.

That being said, I think this is a solid deal for both sides. Edmonton has to do something to try to salvage this season and another year of McDavid's and Draisaitl's primes.
