Some numbers:

No.1 defenceman
7th in Norris voting
26 years old

Seems like a contract according to market. Upset? Blame the market. Edmontoians should be happy that a quality D wants to stay in the city for 9 years.

This was the first seasons where he garnered any Norris votes at all FWIW, I agree that you can blame the market given the deals that were signed this year but still, That's a ton of money for a guy who isn't among the best at his position.

Nurse is fine but but I’ll take Pelech at $5.75M over Nurse every time, and with Klefbom and Larsson gone it looks like Duncan Keith will have to join Nurse and play 30 minutes a night too. That’s asking a lot

nurse will definitely work for that contract

This is his sixth year in the NHL. He's 26..and Edmonton has no defence so yeah ofcourse hes going to log a ton of TOI.

This contract is pretty terrible and its an over payment of about 25%
Weird. All offseason all we've heard is how Adam Larsson is a fantastic defensive player, how Ethan Bear is a great young D. Tyson Barrie is also not terrible.
But Nurse played by far the most of the group simply because everyone else sucks? Which is it?

Normally if you have a bad defense without a #1D, you roll balanced pairings. You don't just throw a dart at the lineup and go "oh well, I guess that bum will have to play 25 minutes per game". That's not how it works.

There is almost no way Nurse can play up to the value of this contract.

Maaaaybe for a year or two but this is going to be the worst contract in the NHL quite quickly.

Nope, Hyman's will be worse. What is going on in Edmonton?

It's a gamble but he's the perfect age to sign an 8 year deal. If he continues to improve he will be well worth it, and if last season was his peak it's only a slight overpayment.

After losing Larsson and Klefbom, it’s not like they had any choice. I’d still take Pelech over him at $5.75M but the oilers had no choice but to give in to Nurse demands. can you imagine how McDavid and Draisaitl would have reacted if they hadn’t?

He’s been a number 1 quality dman for exactly one shortened season.
Bullshit. He has been the Oilers #1 defenceman for 3 years now. Don't let the klefbom fans fool you Nurse surpassed him years ago despite klefbom getting the top pp time a couple seasons ago.

Here is the thing about Nurse, he is a bloody hard worker and has improved his game every year of his career so far. He is a safe bet to go in on long term because of that. His season last year surprised absolutely no one who has actually watched his progression.

The only reason he got any Norris consideration is because of his 36 points in 56 games, a 52 point pace. Those are OK-ish numbers for playing with McDrai.

More importantly his shooting percentage in these 50 games was more than 2x his career average in over 400 games. You adjust his Goals-scored last season based on that and he finishes with 28 points in 56 games. That's a 41 point pace, obviously. So, easily worth $10m.

And that's just stats. Who wants to talk about his bone-headed defensive breakdowns? He's a giveaway machine, not tough to play against, not a clever player. He's had massive down seasons half his career, and no silver lining leadership or other Intangibles.

Thank you Edmonton.

One problem in Edmonton is probably that Nurse is their #1 though. And now, because of this contract, he HAS to be, because they can't afford another one. Kind of reminds me of the Dion Phaneauf contract in Toronto.

I remember the good days when Matt Carle was our highest paid defenseman.

Yup. But luckily we had better guys on good deals. And I mean, that was a transition contract. The goal was to be a better team rather than contend. This Nurse contract is one huge set of handcuffs if he doesn't become a much better player this year. You can't pay a guy like a top-10 D if he's not in that realm.
