Am I crazy or isn’t there a rule against trading players who are on IR?

There’s no rule prohibiting the trade of injured players.

The acquiring team can request that the NHL void the trade (not guaranteed) if the team doctors determine the player’s injury(ies) are more severe than they were lead to believe after doing a physical exam.

Frederic has all the makings to be a premier power forward in this league. The problem is that version of Trent Frederic only shows up 10 games a year
That's fine, most Oilers show up once every 10 games..
He will fit right in if/when healthy..

Assuming Frederic can competently take a spot in the bottom six, this is an excellent move for a cap strapped team. They can bury a higher contract from an under-performing player, and it gives them additional cash to make another, more important move.

Running pretty thin on trade chips, though. The cupboards have been getting barer, so if they don't make the right move for a goalie, they'll likely have blown their last chance at a cup.

Hmmm interesting angle.

So if Frederic is at $575K AAV, and they bury the max (1.5X league min... ~1.3M) then they effectively just gained cap in the transaction?

That's cool.

Has anyone ever done this before? (ie effectively get a playable player for under league min?... I've never heard of it, but I imagine it's been a deadline thing before?)

I think what's so funny here is Fredric is part of the Milan Lucic trade tree since they traded Martin Jones, Collin Miller and the 1st for Jakub Zboril. Next, they trade Sean Kuraly and the 1st that picked Fredric for Martin Jones. Lucic left the Kings for Edmonton.

The Oilers totally won big on this deal.

NJD acquired a pretty good prospect for 575k of cap space that they weren't even going to use.

I'm sure the organization scouted him(Lachance) plenty ..

Pretty good return for the Bruins, the Blues 2ndm 26 4th and Minor league D for Frederic whom they had to move, as he was not going to be re-signed, he has lost some of the toughness and scoring he once had, and getting rid of Jones is a bonus.

Dont bother with reason. The Devils board is obsessed with blaming Fitzgerald for things like nepotism, ruining the team and poor drafting; anyone who comments otherwise is removed

Is it okay if I say something over here, @NJDevs26 ? :biglaugh:
I wouldnt recommend it lol, emotions are running high today as that board collapses

Did the trade deadline come and go already? Oh yeah its on March 7th.

Ever think that maybe, just maybe they're not done?

Where did I say it the deadline came and went? Usually teams save assets like 2nd rounders for more glaring needs.

We did the same thing with Bjugstad. He was only 450k against the cap.

As an Oiler fan I do not understand this deal.

It add toughness but not immediately and Trent is injured and Jones is on the farm trying to find his game.

I am curious if Lechance told the oilers he would not sign with them?

Oilers love making moves that don't move the needle. Should have just made a move for an actual difference maker this season instead of all these smaller moves.

The Oilers have enough talent in their forward group. They needed to bring in someone with a pulse to get the team going.

Sort of disagree. Frederic adds some toughness to the bottom 6 that the oilers need. When healthy he can be a good grinder and play a game the oilers are lacking.

I am curious is this means Kane is on the move

There's a ton of fan-smoke. Not much team smoke.

They miss Foegele and McLeod's speed for sure. More forechecking is good, and I do think adding that element to the 3rd line should help.
both were disappointing in the playoffs. I'm glad neither are back.

The speed we miss belong to Broberg and Holloway.

The Oilers are why the Bruins got Lucic(they were the ones who traded the pick for Samsonov) though, so you've got to factor that in there somewhere too.

Are you suggesting that Lucic signing with Edmonton nearly a decade ago factors into who won this trade?
