ECQF Preview: Your New Jersey Devils vs. Carolina Hurricanes - We're Playoff Bound!

I think a super chippy and physical series will actually favor us for once. We will engage physically - for examples like the Rangers game before Xmas and the first Minnesota game last week in St. Paul. Fights and scrums break out early and Dillon, Kovy, Noesen, Haula get involved and we start hitting . . . That scenario I like. Get Carolina out of their systems and structure. We’ve done well all year in games that take that direction (the first Boston game too when Markstrom got hurt is another example).

Carolina isn’t going to want to fight. Threats not their game. They are more cross check in thr back and run away.

Yes they will try to sucker us into taking retaliation penalties. But the principal remains, a physical and emotional series favors us (for once). We need to be emotionally engaged and aggressive. Therein lies our chance.

For as much as people were panicking about the Canes winning 8 in a row or whatever at the deadline, they've now lost 3 consecutive regulation games to non-playoff teams including DET, BOS, and getting shutout by BUF.

Carolina is 16-19-3 on the road this season. They are not playing well right now. If we can steal a game in their building (we have a better away record than home record, 22-16-2 on the road) then there's no reason we can't win the series.

I am genuinely curious how this series will go because I think it will be a hard fought series.

My biggest concern going in is the offensive depth. Defense and goaltending are strong and I think they can go toe-to-toe with Carolina there. This team is going to need Hischier, Bratt, and Meier to have good series and a couple of depth guys to step up, especially offensively.

It’s going to be tough to generate offense against Carolina at home with Jordan Staal getting matched up against a Devils top line and hoping our second and third lines win their matchup against an Aho or Svechnikov line. Carolina also has an elite PK so it’s hard to count on that being a difference maker.

We’re going to have to win some gritty games and we’re going to need some huge performances by depth players. Feel like this series is going to tell us a lot about some of the depth players on this roster.

Think this one goes the distance, unlike most of the non-NJ hockey world.

I'm at 60/40 Canes win this one, but it's definitely doable.

I have a hard time seeing how this team can beat the Canes if the 2022-2023 team that was dully healthy and made team history lost in 5.

At the same time I think I trust our defense, structure and breakout more this year… Who knows?

Both teams are substantially worse than they were in 22-23 so there’s that. We have a chance because the Canes aren’t all that great but also since Christmas we’ve also played our worst hockey since pre Covid. The hope for this series is Markstrom stops being a bum and the Canes struggle to score.

If the Devils can break the puck out better than they did in 22-23 and avoid Carolina's forecheck with the skaters not being tired and hemmed in a ton then the Devils can easily win the series. I fully expect Markstrom to outplay whoever is in Carolina's net.

Hamliton had a broken wrist and Graves had a broken brain in that series in 2023 + Vitek/Akira weren't good enough to steal games in that series with how Carolina just shoots from everywhere. Luke will have to be a massive factor like he was in 2023 when he came in.

Devils posted events for April 25 & 27 so games 3 and 4.

Only thing that's weird about that schedule is theres gotta be a 2 day break in there somewhere. First day of playoffs is supposed to be April 19th so that would mean game 1 has to be the 20th or 21st with game 2 on the 22nd or 23rd.

I honestly don’t think there’s any scenario where we can easily win this series. Canes are a good, structured team with solid depth and, as you said, their forecheck is extremely efficient. I think you have to be able to contain it, but it’s going to be hard. Man does it suck not having a fully healthy Dougie, Jack and Siegs. I would’ve been way more confident with all those guys on board

So glad to see they made it in. Banking points early was key as they've been worrisome most of the time in 2025.

LGD!

That was my first thought as well.

Unless they’re making us start on a Monday, two days after the first games start.

I don’t think they do that anymore, but I do remember when they stuck game 1 for us vs Florida back in 2012 on the third night of the playoffs.

It will help. Ultimately I think NJ will need some fluky or softy goals to stay competitive. We will see. I'd love to see NJ initiate the rough stuff against Carolina.

The diving is gonna be pathetic. I don't understand how that has continued to be so common amongst their team for so long.
It's more or less the way the Patriots operated under Bellichick. If you can cheat in a way that doesn't get called you have to do it. Until the refs penalize the Canes for the diving they will continue to do it. The problem is the embellishment calls are made with the trip or hold on the other team so they don't hurt the team guilty of the diving.

Didn't mean easily win this series in terms of a cake walk versus Carolina but meant their pathway towards a victory
