Congrats New Jersey on making the playoffs. With you guys facing the Canes in the 1st round which they are the favorite because of how fast they play especially ES, I thought I'd give you guys some info on a series Keefe coached with the Marlies which is kind of familiar to this one.
It was the year after Marlies had won the Calder Cup. They faced Rochester in the opening round and the Marlies were a big under dog. If you asked the experts, people expected Rochester to win this without much issues. They weren't really that further apart in the standings, but if I remember correctly, Buffalo had sent some players down so Rochester's lineup got stronger.
I remember what Keefe said before the series. Paraphrasing but he said something like they know they are underdogs. He told his team there will be stretches where we will be outplayed by a considerable margin, but he said we need to fight through that, and that he will look to make adjustments to at least contain those moments.
The Marlies ended up sweeping Rochester 3-0 which was a huge upset.
Here were the final SOG
101-66 for Rochester including outshooting the Marlies 42-23 in game 2.
So what was the keys that lead to the series win.
1. Marlies goaltending was outstanding. Going to this series, Markstrom will need to steal certain stretches because Carolina will be all over the Devils for some time.
2. Marlies won the special teams battle. They were 2 for 8 on the PP, and 8 for 9 on the PK.
3. Bend but don't break, and never quit. Marlies were down 2-0 in game 2 after 2, and were being outshot 30-10. Marlies tied the game in the third and than won it in OT
4. When it came to the important moments, Marlies came up with the big play and responded when they needed too. They scored the OT winner in game 2, and whenever Rochester grabbed momentum with a goal, Marlies never let it get away.
The reason I'm posting this is so you guys have info on a similar series Keefe was apart of.
I think the Devils have a chance even they aren't fully healthy, but Markstorm is going to have to be amazing in a number of shifts, and they can't let a game get out of control when they are being pressured. PP and PK will be important too. Keefe needs to come with some tactics to slow momentum like he did in the Rochester series.
