At worst the Lohrei situation would have been offsetting penalties since the only reason he went awkwardly into the boards is because he was reaching behind him to hold the Leafs player's stick.

No, it was missed boarding, and it 100% should have been called as such. That said, the McAvoy holding of the stick was pretty obvious too, IMO. He just grabbed that thing and held on for a good ten-plus seconds.
