I think the depth players had a lot more to do with how good the lightning used to be than many realize. This isn't the same team at all. Losing to the leafs and now can't even get out of their own zone.

It was pretty well known at the time, how elite their depth was. Guys like Johnson, Palat, Gourde, Coleman, Goodrow all made for a dominant bottom-six during their Cup years. At least that's how I remember it; I don't know which years each player came and went. But it seemed like every other GM wanted a piece of the pie and started poaching these guys in free agency, often overpaying or giving out significant term.
