It's because rather than trying to push the puck out, they shell back in towards Hank, so if the puck goes past the forwards sticks, it goes straight to the opposing teams D-men. It's bad and creates too many 5 on 5 PKs.

Our collapsing defense is the reason we get trapped in the zone for minutes at a time.

Our team having a collective IQ of 10 is what leads to us getting trapped.
