It's because rather than trying to push the puck out, they shell back in towards Hank, so if the puck goes past the forwards sticks, it goes straight to the opposing teams D-men. It's bad and creates too many 5 on 5 PKs.

I've caught him laboring real hard a few times in the past games. I'm not sure that he's hurt, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to find out that he's got a lower body issue.

A lower body issue wouldn't explain why he can't stick handle/hold on to the puck or think to shoot instead of deking 15 times.
