Series Talk: ECFs Discussion - Rod: Game 5 is gonna be a doozy!

In case we don't resign Marchand, how would Marner look as RW with Luosty and Lundy?

First off, Marner is one of the highest paid players in hockey and will probably be that again. Second, he is a coward with zero leadership attributes. No thank you. He is the complete antithesis of what this team is built to accomplish.

The 3rd really has shined when they have that talented but hard worker. Marchment, Reino, Marchand.
Tank was good too, but could tell he just wasn't in his prime.

Maybe Marner could be successful, but IMO he's going to the highest bidder, which still may be the Leafs lol
As long as there are teams overpaying and trying to make the POs, he will get the money he wants.

But maybe he finally wants to win, and lose his reputation as a PO choker? We would have pretty good arguments, and when Zito can get the best defensive Dman in the league for 5 Mil he might be able to pull of miracle.
Though there definitely will be an agent who would talk him out of "success over money".

Of course this is boring off-season fantasy talk, maybe a bit early

I do have to ask, if he was to come here and sit in this locker room, would we be saying the same thing about him? He doesn't seem to lack the care or intensity and i think its hard to focus on your job when you have no choice but to focus on the fact that his teammates weren't.....they weren't...uhhh..ffs, they just weren't.

I remember what our SELKE candidate looked like before he came here too. What's really the variable with Marner, yknow?

Of course everything i said could be BS and you could be right tho.

That's kind of my point. He actually is overpriced right now because he is missing the mentioned attributes. But on our team, there is enough leadership and toughness. He does not have to be a leader in our team. So I am just fantasizing if he would thrive in our surroundings.

I'm not trying to sound arrogant but, this team just doesn't look talented on paper. Beyond the first line, you have a very very very average talent level. I know they play a good structured game, but if I were doing an on paper analysis, I would say the Panthers kill this team in 4-5 games. If Barkov and Reino shut down the top line as they often do, they will be relying on Roslovic, and an aging Staal? Slavin is good on defense, but the rest of that d-core is also very very average. Jury is out on Nikishin? What am I missing here?

I would give Mitch Marner a chance to prove that he could change and play better if he came here. I would expect to be disappointed. Fortunately, I'm not worried about that situation, as I think Bill Zito's priority will be shopping for difference-makers right here at home.

And I never felt that way about Reinhart? Reino has always been willing to get absolutely pounded to make a good play with the puck. No spinny backhands into the neutral zone to avoid contact, at least not that I really ever saw.

I suppose that when I look at this team, I think that he would actually be a detriment. Even if he takes an incredibly team friendly deal (like, one that will upset the NHLPA), he's a 100 point player. It's going to be a LOT of money.

overall theyre weaker than when we faced them 2 years ago

and were stronger on the blue line and depth wise, id feel confident if tkachuk wasnt deepthroating meloxicam to piss without crying and verhaghe stop letting katie use the dragon strapon

Slavin is one of the best defenders in the sport, they have a good blue line and they play very well as a team. The Panthers will need to play like they did in game 5 and 7 to win this series. Don't kid yourself... the advantage we have over the Canes is that we have better top end forward talent.

The problem right now is that our top end forward talent isn't f***ing scoring. Tkachuk should legitimately be on IR, Reinhart keeps hitting the post, and Verhaeghe, my god, what has happened to Carter Verhaeghe?

I'll give you the Slavin point. But that d-core isnt good from a defensive point of view. Burns has never been good defensively and especially now at age 64. Ghost is an offensive d who is mistake prone. Orlov is old and not great at this point in his career probably belongs on the 3rd pair or retired. Nikishin is without a doubt ultra talented but hes a rookie. Sean Walker = who?

The best team wins, not the biggest stars.

Mariner thrives only in a low-expectation environment where he is more of a complementary piece to an already established leadership group. A (playoff) team doesn't pay a player +$14mil for not making an impact on crucial, season-defining games.
And Mariner doesn't know how to lead. It takes some balls to scream at the Leafs depth players to wake up when he himself hadn't done jackshit in this series. Wasn't he like 28, 29yo already? He's a Huberdeau2.0 who might figure out how to play in the playoffs when he's closer to 35yo.

I've been impressed with how Burns, Ghost, and Nikishin have performed in the playoffs. Of course, I would love for them to turn into pumpkins, but I've been impressed so far.

IMO the big difference in this series is going to be special teams. The Canes' power play is so, so much better than ours.

theyve still played great defense
I know the devils were a joke and the Caps prob were pretenders but they took care of them as such and never really got blown out.

I think they can take us to the woodshed a few games
