Because of the prolonged break (boredom) leading up to today, I strayed away from Old No. 26 to read many opinions. I haven't heard much comparison of the two D corps, which is where I think we'll see the difference in the series.

So much of how people think about the play of defensemen is in how they defend, but that's only half their job. A major component is how well they exit their zone, influenced by how well the forecheck forces them to make mistakes. We saw in the NJD series that if they can't get into the O zone, it pales the skill of their forwards. We're going to see a bunch of dump and chase from FLA, so puck retrieval and zone exits will be huge for CAR, which I think they'll handle relatively well.

So yeah, play from defensemen is where the series will be decided in favor of the Hurricanes.

I’m with you on this. Everyone’s like “these are the two best forechecking teams in the league! So much different than New Jersey!” as if that’s an equalizer. On paper, I know which D core I’d rather have retrieving the puck against the best forechecking team in the league. We’ll see how it works out.

I agree.

I'll also add though that I think Florida's d....even if hemmed in will do a good job keeping the Canes forwards to the exterior of the ice like the NYI did. NJ was terribly built for that so in addition to holding the zone they got the puck inside the dots pretty well leading to all those 5 goal games.

I think the Canes score less this series and will need some ugly goals.
