As a Habs fan I obviously hope us, but it would be silly to let the disappointment overshadow what must be such an amazing feeling for that CBJ team, and especially Monahan who lost such a great friend and someone he moved to Columbus to play with. Regardless of who ends up getting in, I'll be cheering for that team I guess.
Jackets did it to themselves. After the stadium series game they were in the WC1 spot and striking distance from the 3rd in the division. Either way it's a big step forward for the team.
...IF my Habs don't make it, I'm very happy it'll be Columbus...wish BOTH of us could have made it...

The Eastern conference is just too weak as it shows how much less points you need to be in playoffs versus western conference. The fact that a 10th place team in Canucks could easily have clinched playoffs in the East a week ago instead of being eliminated a week ago shows that Western Conference is a much superior conference. Vegas, Dallas, Winnipeg, Colorado are all legit contenders. The only Eastern conference contenders i see in the East are Florida and Washington. Canes will just lose again, while Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Tampa and New Jersey all have holes and weaknesses, with some of them just being new comers to playoffs.

West has multiple bottomfeeders that give the rest of the teams inflated point totals.
East is competitive top-to-bottom which spreads out points.
It's simple math. The more competitive conference will almost by defnition have the lower playoff cut-off.
You think Canucks would not have beaten Montreal or Ottawa if they were in the East? East also has crap teams like Buffalo and their top teams like NJD is weak as hell. Western conference seems much more physical and tougher to beat except maybe Chicago and SJ.

If you swap conferences for Buffalo/Boston and Chicago/San Jose I think both Ottawa and Montreal would have a few more points.
Playoff cutoff in the East was 100 points in 2022. Were those teams simply that good, or did it have something to do with half the East tanking that season?

0-1-2 in their last 3 when they MUST win to clinch a spot. Now it’s counting on the Jackets to win when they could have put away the bottom feeding Blackhawks and secure their spot.6-2-2 in their last ten games... Bunch of losers

One of the better indicators of success is goals for vs goals against differential. Only one West team is ahead of Tampa. The rest are all 22 or more behind. Those teams you talk about that would have made it in the East but missed in the West? -14 and -17. The Habs are the only outlier in the East in that regard. CBJ could still get in and eliminate the outlier.

Nope. Wins include SO wins as well. ROW does not.
Thats why they use RW as the first tie break. It puts emphasis on winning in regulation. Second tie break is ROW as it puts emphasis on avoiding having to go to SO
Full credit to Columbus. Five wins in a row! Still two big "Ifs" to overcome – Montreal's game and their final game against NYI – but no matter what happens, it's a successful season, a kind of redemption, and something to build on.
Montreal's the second youngest roster in the league, a freshly rebuilt team that wasn't supposed to be in the playoffs, yet here they are – 1 point from clinching a spot. Two points in their last three games is a frustrating tease, but this was after a six-game winning streak. They weren't going to win every game. Nothing's settled yet, but no matter what happens, definitely a successful season for the Habs that bodes well for next season and beyond.
Both teams had huge ups and downs. In the end, whichever team makes it deserves it. Period.
