Eastern Conference Wild Card Watch

This race is kind of funny, but you might be surprised to know that it’s actually been even worse in the past.

In 2016, Minnesota took the final playoff spot. They had 87 points, and entered the playoffs on a 5 game losing streak.

The team below them was Colorado with 82 points.

There were 14 teams in the West that season, and only 8 of them were above .500

NHL should have a rule where if the WC2 spot doesn’t reach 90 points, no one makes it and it’s just a bye lol.

All of these teams in the race for WC2 stink
The NHL should have a rule where if the division leading team doesn't reach 110 points the division win is forfeited and no banner or division title is awarded.

I think Ottawa should not be included in that group anymore. They need a collapse like we've never seen before to lose their ticket.
The 'Biggest Losers' group of MTL, NYR, CBJ, NYI and DET are very unlikely to produce 2 teams with 89+ points. Maybe one of them gets 88 or 89 points.

They are also unlikely to have two of the teams catch Ottawa in regulation wins (NYR is ahead, but the rest probably won't), which means Ottawa has 9 games to get the remaining 4-5 points needed to make the playoffs. Combine this with their very easy schedule (games against Chicago, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Blue Jackets x2, and Habs), and 8 of their 9 remaining games being at home (.750 points %) - that's why the professionals have us at a 99.5% playoff chance. Could probably go 2-7 at this point and make it with how crap it's been under them.

Yeah, I'm not used to seeing the bar this low.

I remember a few years ago when the habs missed the playoffs with 96 points.... and now it might not even take 90.... I guess that's why my inclination was that at least one of these teams in the mix will finish on a tear... but its getting less likely.

CBJ and the Habs drafted 4OA and 5OA last June. They both have nothing to be embarrassed about if they get in (I think WC 2 will be one of them). The teams that should be embarrassed . . . they know who they are.

It's all in context.

Rangers and wings are probably not happy to be in this group. The jackets didn't have any expectations after their tragic summer. The habs just wanted to be "in the mix" in year 3 of the hugo rebuild, while the Isles are pretty much where they were expected as a bubble team.

What dragged the bar down this year is the bruins finally running out of juice, and the Rangers unlikely downfall.

I said a while ago that the NYR would probably make it in as the teams chasing with games in hand seem to have faltered and they win the tiebreaker but just let it end so painful to watch and maybe the Habs get it instead no one is making a strong case though.

Frankly I'd like to see Columbus make it just for the backstory.
