E60: Unrivaled Wings/Avs Documentary

I'm not the only one that got surprised by the ending

(hint: it connects to a young star in today's league)

ESPN+ has an extended version up now that clocks in at 2 hours, 7 minutes. The broadcast version was probably closer to 90 minutes.

Will be interesting to see what hit the cutting room floor in order to make room for commercials. This is me being nitpicky, but I would have liked a little bit more back story on Quebec/Detroit in the early 90's rising to be contenders. Although since the NHL co-produced this with ESPN, they maybe wanted to avoid the relocation reference. Some of the HOF talents seemed like afterthoughts.

I did enjoy the McCarty quote that went something like "To this day, if you turn your back against Claude Lemieux on the ice, that's your own fault." I attended a light hearted reunion scrimmage in 2015 for the 1995 Devils Cup team. Claude gave Bobby Carpenter a healthy slash around the ankles and Carpenter nearly gave him a two hander in retaliation before he composed himself.

Star Wars didn’t give a good look to the Empire.

It's funny they said Detroit was soft in 1997. That team was mean as hell. They had one of the meanest hitters in the game (behind Scott Stevens), plus McCarty, Kocur and Lapointe.

Playoffs were so much more exciting back in the 90s compared to the creampuff teams of today's NHL. Playoffs (or games for that matter) are so routinely systematic waiting for the opposing team to make a mistake then review every goal looking for a loophole to call it back. No grit, not drama, everything is soo predictable.

Sorry for the rant,,,, just nerding out on great old time hockey.

Watched it last night and it was awesome. Really helped my wife understand the level of intensity and history between the Wings and Colorado.

It's a must see for any fan

Here is the extended video, it's unlisted on YouTube, I hope will stay up, grab it while you can.

Starting it now, definitely some stuff that I wanted to see but hit the cutting room floor for the TV broadcast.

So far a little bit more from the 1995 Red Wings losing in the Cup Finals and a bit of Quebec relocating to Colorado.

Amusing anecdote about the Avs players trying to get seated at a busy restaurant in Denver and not getting preferential treatment. Mike Ricci jokes that wouldn't have happened in Quebec.

And they acknowledge the Wings chasing Patrick Roy in his final Montreal game in the extended version. I definitely would have kept that in the TV cut.

I've only watched half of the extended cut, but it was noticeably better with some of the backstory with the extra time. TV cut was still enjoyable but they kinda yada yada'd a few things.

Damn, the video got taken down. I was able to watch a good chunk on break. I was going to rip the video and save it.

hopefully someone else did. This 2+ hour doc is something special!

So many stars aligned before this rivalry really took off.

- Lemieux and the Devils beating the Wings in ‘95.
- Avs/Wings in the very first game in Denver.
- Wings chasing Roy in his last game in Montreal.
- Vernon giving advice to Roy about not retiring.

Lots of brewing.

Bally Sports Detroit did a great service to that rivalry 25 years later
